Helpful Tip of the Day

Over the years I've been asked by patients when is the best time to have children checked by a chiropractor. For me I've literally checked my kids every month of their lives, they were only hours old the first time. In general, sometime during the first month because the neck can be out of alignment in the womb or during delivery(which is what happened to my daughter). Occassionally they may be out of alignment in their mid-back area if they are extremely collicky, one adjustment usually fixes the problem. They next checkup should be when they start walking. Between ages of 2 to four at least 2 times a year. Between the ages of 4 to 10, a minimum of 4 times a year to once a month. Getting your kids checked regularly will not only have them grow straight and less likely to have scoliosis but everytime you get adjusted, your immune system is boosted - your kids will be healthier.
Until next time

Helpful Tip of the Day
Many of us have children who enjoy playing video games on their X-box or Playstation (me too!) but have you ever looked at the posture while playing their game? For most kids it’s what I call the bump on the log posture, head forward and a very rounded back posture. If your trying to create new chiropractic patients - great!! Not to mention it looks so attractive! The solution is to make it a requirement that when they get to play they must lay on their stomach on the floor and that will reverse the rounded posture and keep the head back where it belongs. You can go to my website and read the article I have on this which includes a picture of how you want them playing.

Helpful Tip of the Day

When I was a baby my mom was told that babies needed to be on their stomachs, now we know that sleeping on their back is better so I wanted to write this recommendation to parents of young children. Starting with the babies, lay them on their backs and some will do just fine, others my not sleep as well and you'll have to lay them on their side. Since the head is as wide as the shoulders there isn’t stress on the neck but as the shoulders become wider as they grow, you’ll want to try to train them from that habit. In my house as my kids grew into toddlers, our nightly routine would be to sing or read and pray with them but they had to lie on their backs. And of course toddlers really want you to do that, they will comply. Have them hug a stuffed animal or pillow against their face and they will sleep longer on their backs. Having children sleep on their backs will help them to grow straighter and have less back and neck issues as adults.

Helpful Tip of the Day

Many people have back pain from mild to severe when simply bending over in the bathroom sink to brush their teeth or when they are doing dished in the kitchen. One way to take the strain off of your back is to every so slightly bend your knees and lean against the counter. This takes the pressure off of your back and onto the legs....or just don't brush your teeth, I know a great dentist!!!

Helpful tip of the day
Do you get back soreness from doing laundry? One solution is to make sure your dryer is raised up, for example at my house we had to twist and bend to get the clothes out of the dryer. But this position is the weakest for the back!! The solution is to raise the height of your dryer by building a wooden box, just make sure you can still reach the controls! Good Luck
