In honor of Black History Month, we want to recognize some of the inequities that black people face in healthcare. We hear stories from our black patients about having to advocate harder for themselves in healthcare settings. They often report that their pain isn’t taken seriously by medical professionals, or that they feel the need to over-explain themselves.

Data shows us that black people are not receiving the healthcare that their white counterparts are. And, even though reports show things have been slowly improving for black patients since the early 2000s, we still have a long way to go.

Recognizing the systemic and implicit racism built into our healthcare system is the first step in weeding it out.

We want Well + Core to be a place where all people feel safe, heard, and cared for. We will continue educating ourselves on inequities in the healthcare system. If you ever have a suggestion for how we can make you feel better in our environment, please share that with us. We welcome the feedback.

Tearing is one of the most common fears we get asked about by pregnant patients (especially first-time pregnant patients).

While tearing is common, it is NOT guaranteed. Birth position, pushing strategies, perineal support, baby’s position, and how quickly the baby is delivered all influence the risk of tearing. Pelvic floor preparation in pregnancy can help improve tissue mobility and coordination, which can greatly reduce your risk of tearing and help minimize the severity of tearing if it does happen.

Another common fear is that a tear won’t heal. That’s not true! Regardless of the severity of your tear, there are exercises and recovery techniques we can use to help you heal postpartum. A tear does not mean you’ll live the rest of your life peeing your pants or having pain with in*******se. With help and support, you can and will get through this!

Do you have pregnancy fears or anxiety creeping in? You’re not alone, and nothing is “wrong” with you for feeling that way.
Your body is growing and protecting a sensitive little life while going through massive physical and hormonal changes. This is a big deal.

In pelvic floor physical therapy, we’ve discovered the best ways to help reduce fear is by focusing on three main areas:

1️⃣ Honoring your choices + plan
Find providers who listen to you. They should be curious about your birth plan, your wishes, your pain management preferences, who you want involved, and your biggest concerns, for both your body and your baby. At Well + Core, our goal is to help you plan and prepare for the experience you want, while also supporting you if things change.

2️⃣ Education (without the scare tactics)
The more you understand what’s really happening with your body, the more confident you’ll be able to handle each step of the pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum progression. Try to find providers who explain what’s happening in your body, how your pelvic floor changes, how birth positions matter, and what recovery really looks like. They should also be able to talk through how your plan might need to adapt, so you’re not shocked or uninformed if things don’t go as planned.

3️⃣ Preparation
Preparing your pelvic floor goes A LONG way. Pelvic floor physical therapy helps with pelvic floor awareness (both strengthening and relaxing), breathing strategies, birth-position prep, and scar/tissue education for both vaginal birth and C-section. When your body is prepared and you understand your options, fear often shifts into confidence and flexibility, even in the intensity of labor and delivery.
