A new way to think about stuttering therapy ♥️

Our choices as caregivers today can make a world of difference for our children and adolescents who stutter.

When parents demand fluency or tools to “fix” stuttering, they may rupture relationship and safety, potentially leading to a long journey of trauma for their children.

So speech therapists have an opportunity to walk alongside parents to encourage, support, and nurture their children, helping them prevent trauma connected to the burden of suppressing their authentic voices.

By cultivating relationship and safety in the communicative environment at home, caregivers can ensure that stuttering does not become a shame-inducing experience for their children.

If you’re ready to make your home a supportive and encouraging environment but don’t know how to do it, we have a resource to get you started!

“Nurturing and Empowering Your Child Who Stutters” is our free short film dedicated to helping caregivers provide a positive environment for their children who stutter.

Children with dyslexia and/or ADHD are likely to struggle with multi-step directions. In my opinion, I think the most helpful tip from this article is to have the student complete 2-3 steps at a time and receive feedback from the teacher/parent before moving on to the next 2 steps. This will ensure the student isn't misunderstanding the directions or skipping one of the middle steps.

Preface by Anne-Marie I’m delighted to introduce you to Dr. Leilani Sáez. An educational researcher and former classroom teacher, Dr. Sáez knows how tough it can be to reach kids with working…

Co-owner and SLP Amy is taking part of a book club on stuttering. Stuttering therapy should focus on acceptance. The goal is not fluent speech, but acceptance in who you are and an emphasis on WHAT you say, not HOW you say it.

Grateful for a compelling discussion during our first session in our spring SLP book club! One SLP perfectly captured the essence of Chris Anderson’s “Every Waking Moment”:

“A book of the human spirit!”

We had SLPs from all across the country, including CA, CT, IL, KS, MD, MN, MS, NJ, NY, OH, OK, SC, TN, TX, and WI. 🙌

We discussed:

🧩 The inner life of stuttering
🧩 The importance of addressing what children think and feel on the inside as they experience stuttering
🧩 Finding one’s potential while learning to live collaboratively with stuttering
🧩 The importance of our work with parents of children who stutter as their individual journeys unfold
🧩 Holding space for the emotions, reactions, and experiences of caregivers and people who stutter

We can’t wait for the next session!

Registration is closed for this semester (we’ve run out of room!), but we’d love to see you for the next session, so follow Spero Stuttering, Inc. and Christopher Anderson to hear about our next book club, along with other stuttering PD opportunities!
