When a friend is going through something difficult, I go to work in my kitchen, making homemade herbal broth as a base, then crafting a comforting soup with flavor and love. Best Chicken Soup was my friend Mark's favorite when he was going through chemo. In spite of horrific mouth sores, he could eat this soup and came to crave it when he wasn't able to eat much else. I was thrilled and went to work when his wife Sue let me know he was ready for more.
Making soup from scratch is a long, thoughtful, therapeutic process. I tweak flavors, experiment with textures, find beauty in new herbs, craft recipes for dietary challenges. And as I go, I think of the people who will be eating what I create. I see them, I savor memories of time spent with them, and I pray for them. A lot of love and creativity and gratefulness go into a pot of broth or soup.
If you've enjoyed broth or soup from my kitchen, which recipe is your favorite? Share in the comments?
