Ever feel like one parent is the “fun one” and the other is the “discipline one”?

Dr. James Craig reminds us that kids actually need both warmth and structure from every caregiver. When parents balance connection and discipline, children learn boundaries, build trust, and handle those tougher moments, like timeouts or consequences, with more understanding.

🎉🌼 Congratulations to one of our Pediatric ICU nurses, Sarah Scarlett, BSN, RN, our newest DAISY Foundation Award honoree!

Sarah was nominated by a patient’s family for making a lasting impact during their child’s 38-day stay for Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APML) treatment. They shared that Sarah combined exceptional clinical expertise with genuine compassion—helping their daughter, Piper, feel safe, supported, and even find moments of joy during a difficult time.

Some of the patient's favorite memories came from time spent with Sarah—teaching her the “chicken wing” song, making bracelets together, and playfully going along with Piper’s idea that there must be “giggle juice” in her medicine. Those small, joyful interactions brought light and laughter when it was needed most.

💚 We’re so proud to celebrate Sarah for her remarkable care, kindness, and the unforgettable difference she made for this family.

Please join us in congratulating Sarah in the comments below!

🐾🩷 Winnie and Mav here, wishing you a happy and healthy ! Keeping your heart healthy is so important and we do a lot of work to support our pediatric patients when they come to see the cardiologist or heart doctor. Two common procedures we support are Echocardiograms (Echo) and Electrocardiograms (EKG).

An ECHO is a picture of your heart that helps doctors see how it’s working. During an Echo, we help by:
- Lying next to the child on the bed to provide deep-pressure comfort and a calm, steady presence.
- Offering a soft body to pet and snuggle instead of thinking about the cold gel or probe.
- Modeling slow, steady breathing to help the child match that rhythm and stay relaxed and still.

An EKG shows how your heart is working by recording its electrical signals. During an EKG, we help by:
- Being a “practice patient” so kids can see that the EKG stickers and leads don’t hurt.
- Letting the child place the stickers on us, giving them a sense of control before the real procedure.
- Modeling how to lie super still so the test can be done quickly and accurately.

These are just some of the ways we support these patients and we couldn’t do it without the support of our incredible Pediatric Cardiology Team!

🏒 ⭐ 2026 Battle of the Badges Buddy Spotlight fueled by Eastern Propane & Oil

Last year, Astraea was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive childhood brain cancer, CNS Neuroblastoma FoxR2 Activated. She and her family are no strangers to rare disorders. At three years old, she was diagnosed with a very rare genetic disorder, STXBP1 disorder. Astraea continues to receive expert and compassionate care at Dartmouth Health Children’s and the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center(CHaD).

Our Buddies partner with Team Police and Team Fire, inspiring our first responders to hit the ice and play for a purpose. Each Buddy’s story reminds us why this game matters — supporting Dartmouth Health Children’s kids and their families every step of the way.

Sleep training or sleep learning? 💤

Pediatrician Dr. Geraldine Rubin prefers the term sleep learning; it's all about helping babies develop the skills to soothe themselves to sleep. A few best practices:

🌙 Start routines early with consistent bedtimes and wake times.
🧸 Around 4–6 months, try putting your baby down slightly awake to practice self-soothing.
💤 By 6–9 months, these habits help build a strong foundation before separation anxiety sets in.

Remember: no one truly sleeps through the night—but babies can learn to fall back asleep on their own.

🐾 Mav here! I got to spend some time with our PainFree Program team. We understand that medical procedures can be scary and stressful for children. Our PainFree Program works to individualize each child’s experience to meet their needs and minimize their fears and concerns. Staffed by specially trained nurses, a child life specialist and our anesthesia team, this team works together to make the best plan to support kids through short procedures and testing. We’re seeing more serious flu cases this season, even some leading to death. The best way to protect yourself and your family is to get the flu shot. It’s recommended for everyone 6 months and older, especially kids, caregivers, and anyone around little ones.

Keep up those flu-fighting habits too:
🧼 Wash your hands often
🧪 Use hand sanitizer when needed
🏡 Stay home if you’re feeling sick

In addition to seasonal vaccines like the flu shot, how do we protect one another from getting sick? Winnie and Mav have a few tips:

🧼 Hand hygiene: Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or blowing noses.
😷 Wear a mask when recommended: Follow your child’s healthcare team’s guidance on masking, vaccines, and when to seek care if breathing symptoms or fevers worsen.
🤧 Cover your cough and sneezes: Teach children to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their elbow, then throw tissues away and clean hands right after.
🏠Stay home when sick: Keep children home and away from group settings when they have a fever, significant cough, or other symptoms of illness so they can rest and avoid spreading germs.

🐾 Mav here! Kids with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers don’t have to do this alone. Every three months, our diabetes team turns clinic life into community life at our T1D support group. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with others who are living with Type 1 diabetes, share struggles and triumphs, and have a little fun with their care team!

The adults chat with our social worker, while I partner with our diabetes educator and dietician to work with the kids. we play games, swap diagnosis stories and talk about their favorite diabetes snacks. At our last meeting, we made little animals with T1D and bedazzled syringes, turning something scary into something sparkly. I “supervised” from my nap spot in the middle, always ready for a quick snuggle break.

Having a chronic illness like diabetes can make life feel extra hard and lonely, but my friends say that going to group helps them feel less alone.
