Gobble, gobble! 🦃

What could be better for our November raffle drawing than a turkey!?!

All patients that visit our clinic from November 1st - 18th as well as anyone that likes, follows, and shares the Called to Care page (must do all three!) will be entered into our raffle drawing!

Once you’ve liked, followed, and shared our page, write your name below to be entered into the drawing!

We will draw a name for the turkey on the morning of Thursday, November 20th!

Additionally, as some of our patients do not have Facebook, all Called to Care patients during November 1-18 will be automatically entered to win!

Protecting Yourself in Cold Weather: Essential Tips from Called to Care

As the temperature drops, it's crucial to take steps to protect your health and well-being. Here are some important tips to stay safe and warm during the cold weather:

1. **Dress in Layers**
- **Base Layer:** Wear moisture-wicking materials to keep sweat away from your skin.
- **Middle Layer:** Insulating materials like fleece help retain body heat.
- **Outer Layer:** A waterproof and windproof jacket protects against the elements.

2. **Keep Extremities Warm**
- **Hats:** A significant amount of body heat is lost through the head. Wear a warm hat.
- **Gloves or Mittens:** Protect your hands from frostbite. Mittens are usually warmer than gloves.
- **Socks and Boots:** Insulated, waterproof boots and thick socks can prevent cold feet.

3. **Stay Hydrated and Nourished**
- Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Warm beverages like tea or soup are great choices.
- Eat a balanced diet to maintain energy levels. Foods high in carbohydrates and fats can help keep you warm.

4. **Limit Outdoor Exposure**
- Try to stay indoors during extreme cold spells.
- If you must go outside, take frequent breaks indoors to warm up.

5. **Be Aware of the Signs of Hypothermia and Frostbite**
- **Hypothermia:** Symptoms include shivering, confusion, drowsiness, and slurred speech. If you suspect hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately.
- **Frostbite:** Look for numbness, tingling, or discoloration in your extremities. If you notice these signs, get to a warm place and seek medical help.

6. **Prepare Your Home**
- Ensure your home is adequately insulated. Seal drafts and consider using space heaters safely.
- Keep an emergency kit with blankets, food, and water in case of power outages.

7. **Stay Active**
- Engage in light exercise indoors to keep your blood circulating and body warm.

8. **Check on Vulnerable Individuals**
- Reach out to elderly family members, neighbors, or those with chronic health issues to ensure they are safe and warm.

# # # Conclusion
Cold weather can pose serious health risks, but by taking these precautions, you can help protect yourself and others. For more information or to schedule a check-up, contact Called to Care at (270) 215-1408 or book your appointment online at https://calledtocareky.com

Do I need a Primary Care Provider?

Is it important to establish care with a healthcare provider for several key reasons. A few considerations include:

1. Continuity of Care: Having a regular healthcare provider ensures you receive consistent and coordinated care. Your provider knows your medical history, which helps in making accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans.

2. Preventive Care: Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help detect health issues early before they become serious. Providers can offer vaccinations, screenings, and lifestyle advice to prevent illness.

3. Management of Chronic Conditions: If you have chronic health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, a healthcare provider helps monitor and manage these conditions to prevent complications.

4. Health Education and Support: A provider can educate you about healthy habits, nutrition, stress management, and other factors that contribute to your overall well-being.

5. Emergency Preparedness: In case of sudden illness or injury, having an established healthcare provider means you have a trusted professional to quickly contact and coordinate your care.

6. Improved Health Outcomes: Studies show that people with regular healthcare providers tend to have better health outcomes and lower healthcare costs.

Overall, establishing a relationship with a healthcare provider is a crucial step in maintaining your health and addressing medical concerns effectively.

High cholesterol, also known as hyperlipidemia, is linked to several significant health risks, particularly affecting the cardiovascular system. Here are the main health risks associated with high cholesterol levels:

1. **Heart Disease**
- **Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)**: High cholesterol can lead to the buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries, which can restrict blood flow to the heart and increase the risk of heart attacks.

2. **Stroke**
- **Ischemic Stroke**: Plaque buildup in arteries supplying blood to the brain can lead to a stroke, where blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted.

3. **Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)**
- High cholesterol can cause narrowing in the arteries that supply blood to the limbs, leading to pain, numbness, and increased risk of infections or gangrene.

4. **High Blood Pressure**
- Elevated cholesterol levels can contribute to hypertension as arteries become narrowed and less flexible, putting extra strain on the heart.

5. **Gallbladder Disease**
- Excess cholesterol can lead to the formation of gallstones, which can cause pain and complications in the gallbladder.

6. **Diabetes**
- High cholesterol is often associated with insulin resistance, which can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, further exacerbating cardiovascular risks.

7. **Atherosclerosis**
- This condition involves the hardening and narrowing of arteries due to plaque buildup, which can lead to serious cardiovascular events.

**Conclusion**
Managing cholesterol levels through lifestyle changes, regular check-ups, and medication (if necessary) is crucial to reducing these health risks. If you have concerns about your cholesterol levels or overall heart health, it's best to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options.

🦠 **Stay Healthy This Season: Tips to Prevent COVID-19 and the Flu!** 🦠

As we enter the colder months, it's essential to stay vigilant against both COVID-19 and the flu. Here are some effective tips to keep you and your loved ones safe:

1. **Get Vaccinated!**
- Ensure you receive your flu shot and stay updated with your COVID-19 vaccinations. Vaccination is your best defense against severe illness.

2. **Practice Good Hygiene:**
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public spaces. When soap isn't available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

3. **Wear Masks in Crowded Spaces:**
- Consider wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, especially if community transmission rates are high.

4. **Maintain Distance:**
- Keep a safe distance from others, particularly if they are coughing, sneezing, or not wearing a mask. A safe distance is 6+ feet apart.

5. **Stay Home When Sick:**
- If you feel unwell or exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 or the flu, please stay home to protect others.

6. **Stay Informed:**
- Keep up with local health guidelines and updates regarding COVID-19 and flu prevention.

7. **Boost Your Immune System:**
- Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep to help strengthen your immune system.

Let’s work together to keep our community healthy! If you have questions or need more information, don’t hesitate to contact us or visit our clinic.

Do I need a daily multivitamin?

Whether you should take a daily multivitamin depends on several factors including your diet, health status, lifestyle, and specific nutritional needs. Here are some points to consider:

1. Diet Quality: If you eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and dairy, you might already be getting adequate vitamins and minerals from food.

2. Nutritional Gaps: If your diet lacks certain food groups or you have dietary restrictions (e.g., vegetarian, vegan), a multivitamin can help fill nutritional gaps.

3. Health Conditions: Certain health conditions, age groups, or life stages (like pregnancy or older adults) may increase nutrient requirements, making supplements beneficial.

4. Specific Deficiencies: If tests show you are deficient in specific nutrients (like vitamin D, B12, iron), targeted supplements may be advised.

5. Safety and Dosage: Excessive intake of some vitamins/minerals can be harmful, so it’s important not to exceed recommended daily amounts.

6. Consult Healthcare Provider: It’s always best to discuss supplementation with a healthcare professional who knows your health history.
