Determining whether your pain is due to muscles, joints or fascia can be difficult. In general, muscle injuries and joint problems feel worse the more you move. Fascia adhesions tend to feel better with movement and also respond well to heat therapy, which helps bring back the tissueโ€™s elasticity.

For some people, adhesions can worsen over time, causing the fascia to compress and contort the muscles it surrounds. This can result in hard, tender knots in the muscles, called trigger points. Myofascial pain syndrome is a condition in which those trigger points cause pain to occur:
* During movement
* When pressure is applied
* In seemingly unrelated parts of the body (referred pain)

Fascia is the thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle in place. The tissue does more than provide internal structure; fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin. When stressed, it tightens up.

Although fascia looks like one sheet of tissue, itโ€™s actually made up of multiple layers with liquid in between called hyaluronan. Itโ€™s designed to stretch as you move. But there are certain things that cause fascia to thicken and become sticky. When it dries up and tightens around muscles, it can limit mobility and cause painful knots to develop.

Treatment focuses on relieving pain and getting tight fascia and muscle fibers to relax. Keeping your fascia healthy has many benefits, including ease of movement, better range of motion, and experiencing less pain.
In additional to athletic bodywork, you can help yourself by focusing on posture, movement, and regular stretching.

Welcome to Armstrong Athletic Bodywork!

If your quality of life is suffering due to a chronic injury, or you are dealing with a current injury or pain, let me help you! Call or text 413-212-1744 with any questions or to schedule.

Armstrong Athletic Bodywork is dedicated to providing pain management and treatment of chronic athletic injuries. Here in the Berkshires, we live in a unique centralized location, with the topography and temperatures that foster a multitude of opportunities for seasonal sports and recreation. With all of this year-round exercise, training, and competition, power is continually demanded from our muscles in order to perform efficiently and optimally. And as we all know, with great power comes great responsibility... to our bodies and well-being!

Myofascia, also known as fascia, is a strong, flexible web of dense collagen fibers that surround and interconnect all of the muscles, bones, vessels, and nerves from the top of your head to the bottoms of your feet. Tightness or binding in the myofascia can cause pain to develop. This tightness can be caused by exercise, habitual repetitive motions, and traumas such as injuries from falls, whiplash, or surgery. Stress, prolonged sitting or standing, and poor posture can also affect the myofascia.

Having tight myofascia can contribute toward experiencing headaches, muscle spasms, back & neck pain, sciatica, recurring injuries, decreased flexibility, limited mobility, numbness, and even difficulty breathing. Armstrong Athletic Bodywork offers phenomenal restorative therapy for all athletes. During treatment, a customized combination of moderate to deep pressure techniques are applied to the muscle groups to smooth the fascia, while stretching is used to loosen joints and promote flexibility. This bodywork also encourages the chest and diaphragm to open up, allowing better breathing for athletic performance and daily life. Armstrong Athletic Bodywork is a comprehensive and progressive therapy that benefits the entire active body while improving the breath and relaxing the mind.
