Plantar fasciitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot, playing a key role in arch support.

When this tissue becomes inflamed, it can lead to pain on the underside of the foot, potentially restricting your ability to walk, stand, or engage in other weight-bearing activities.

Common causes of plantar fasciitis include reduced flexibility in the calf muscle, increased body weight, improper footwear such as open-backed shoes or those lacking arch support, as well as having flat feet or high arches.

The pain is most commonly felt in the heel and arch area, often being most intense with the first few steps in the morning after getting out of bed or after prolonged sitting. It may also worsen with extended periods of standing or walking.

At Armstrong Athletic Bodywork, we'll focus on relieving your immediate pain while identifying potential root causes to help prevent it from returning. Using CORE Myofascial Bodywork techniques combined with complementary Red Light Therapy, this approach provides targeted relief and supports recovery. If needed, additional tools like Kinesiology Taping are available to further support your healing.

Every treatment is tailored to your unique needs, with the goal of delivering reduced pain, enhanced performance, and the best possible outcome!

Book your Armstrong Athletic Bodywork treatment by texting 413-212-1744. I look forward to helping you achieve your mobility and performance targets!

Letโ€™s talk tensegrity. Now hold on, I know what you're thinking: "What is that, and why do I care?"

Well, tensegrity, or tensile integrity, is an engineering principal that refers to structures utilizing continuous tension and discontinuous compression for stability.

A good visual of this is the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane, Australia - the worldโ€™s largest tensegrity bridge.

If you take a look at the picture, this bridge is functional because all of its support cables are doing their appropriate jobs.

But guess what? This engineering principle applies to life as well! Dr. Stephen Levin coined the term โ€œbiotensegrityโ€ to apply it to biology - in particular, to our musculoskeletal and fascial networks.

With biotensegrity, our structures are stable and functional not because of the strength of individual pieces, but because of the way the entire structure balances and distributes mechanical stresses as a whole.

Tension is continuously transmitted through the whole structure simultaneously. Which means that an increase in tension to one piece of the structure will result in an increase in tension to other parts of the structure โ€“ even parts that are seemingly โ€œfarโ€ away.

The fascia is the essential structure that suspends our structure (aka our bodies), honeycomb-like, from the inside out. Fascia is the one system that tethers into every other aspect of our physiology, which means that balanced fascia makes for a healthier and happier body.

Unbalanced fascia can lead to dysfunction, such as sending us into a domino effect of detrimental compensatory patterns.

Think about if one of those support cables on the bridge became too short or too long. You probably wouldn't want to go over that bridge, because it's structurally unsound. The same applies to our body's fascia.

Every day, we are continually moving, from molecular to extreme ways. Having a structure that has become compromised creates its fair share of wear and tear, pain, and unpredictability that can lead to even further complications.

But here's the good news - I can help you maintain healthy and happy fascia. There's no need to let your structural integrity go into disrepair! We can restore it to optimal functionality to support an active lifestyle.

This is your opportunity to preserve and enhance movement in your body and your life. Feel free to text me at 413-212-1744 to get started!

Fascia vs. Lymphatic & How They Work Together

Fascia acts like the scaffolding and โ€œprotective casingโ€ that supports lymphatic vessels. If fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can compress lymphatic vessels, slowing drainage. Lymph flow can stagnate, leading to swelling, heaviness, and inflammation.

Conversely, if lymphatic function is poor, fluid can build up within the fascia, making it thicker, stickier, and more prone to adhesions.

Itโ€™s not about choosing which is more important healthy fascia supports healthy lymph flow, and good lymphatic circulation helps keep fascia hydrated, supple, and pain free.

If you want to walk more, lift more, and move consistently, the solution might not be stricter goals or harder workouts. It may be better sleep. This study suggests:

๐Ÿ˜ด Protect a consistent bedtime and wake time.
๐Ÿ˜ด Focus on sleep quality, not just total hours.
๐Ÿ˜ด Reduce evening behaviors that fragment sleep (late-night scrolling, alcohol, irregular schedules).
๐Ÿ˜ด Treat sleep and recovery as part of your fitness routine, not a reward for completing it.

Armstrong Athletic Bodywork restores and grows not only your physical resilience, but your mental resilience as well by restoring nervous-system balance essential for calm, deep, restorative sleep.

It improves circulation while reducing pain, tension, and stress that can keep your body in a heightened state, making it difficult to have a restful night's sleep.

During the day, it creates space for clarity and focus, allowing you to stay aligned with your goals instead of being distracted by pain and discomfort. It's amazing to see a clients' vivacity begin to flourish even after one treatment.

Support your bodyโ€™s rest and recovery so you wake up refreshed and ready to move! Schedule your Armstrong Athletic Bodywork session today and make better sleep & better movement part of your everyday (and every night!) routine.

In your Armstrong Athletic Bodywork treatment, we focus on your targets:
๐ŸŽฏ What are your mobility or activity targets?
๐ŸŽฏ What would it mean if you met your targets?
๐ŸŽฏ What is your "why" for reaching your targets?

This information informs our work together. A specialized form of massage therapy, called CORE Myofascial Bodywork, is used to focus on removing your acute, chronic, and referred pains by freeing restrictions in your myofascia (connective tissue).

A personalized combination of compression, manipulation, stretching, and restoration techniques are utilized to guide your myofascia, muscles, ligaments, and joints into their functional states while restoring lymphatic flow and blood circulation.

After your treatment, youโ€™ll feel lighter, longer, looser, and more flexible, with ease of movement that helps you reach your goals - big or small.๐ŸŽฏ

Welcome to Armstrong Athletic Bodywork!

If your quality of life is suffering due to a chronic injury, or you are dealing with a current injury or pain, let me help you! Call or text 413-212-1744 with any questions or to schedule.

Armstrong Athletic Bodywork is dedicated to providing pain management and treatment of chronic athletic injuries. Here in the Berkshires, we live in a unique centralized location, with the topography and temperatures that foster a multitude of opportunities for seasonal sports and recreation. With all of this year-round exercise, training, and competition, power is continually demanded from our muscles in order to perform efficiently and optimally. And as we all know, with great power comes great responsibility... to our bodies and well-being!

Myofascia, also known as fascia, is a strong, flexible web of dense collagen fibers that surround and interconnect all of the muscles, bones, vessels, and nerves from the top of your head to the bottoms of your feet. Tightness or binding in the myofascia can cause pain to develop. This tightness can be caused by exercise, habitual repetitive motions, and traumas such as injuries from falls, whiplash, or surgery. Stress, prolonged sitting or standing, and poor posture can also affect the myofascia.

Having tight myofascia can contribute toward experiencing headaches, muscle spasms, back & neck pain, sciatica, recurring injuries, decreased flexibility, limited mobility, numbness, and even difficulty breathing. Armstrong Athletic Bodywork offers phenomenal restorative therapy for all athletes. During treatment, a customized combination of moderate to deep pressure techniques are applied to the muscle groups to smooth the fascia, while stretching is used to loosen joints and promote flexibility. This bodywork also encourages the chest and diaphragm to open up, allowing better breathing for athletic performance and daily life. Armstrong Athletic Bodywork is a comprehensive and progressive therapy that benefits the entire active body while improving the breath and relaxing the mind.
