The Red Barn Appoints Matthew Bunt as New Executive Director
The Red Barn is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Bunt as its new Executive Director, effective January 19, 2026. Matt Bunt succeeds Shannon Horsley, who is stepping down after years of dedicated service in various capacities. Horsley will be providing support through the transition period.
“I am truly honored and excited to join The Red Barn as its next Executive Director,” said Bunt. “The Red Barn is well-known for its support of individuals with disabilities in the Birmingham, Alabama area, and I am energized to work with the board, staff, volunteers, and community partners to build on the legacy established by Joy O’Neal, The Red Barn’s founder.”
Matt Bunt brings more than 15 years of experience from his work with The Amelia Center at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and as a certified therapeutic riding instructor with Special Equestrians, Inc., as well as several years as an instructor at The Red Barn. He has led educational and community outreach initiatives, supervised and mentored teams, and fostered a high-performance culture in nonprofit settings.
“Matt’s strategic vision, collaborative leadership style, and alignment with The Red Barn’s mission make him the ideal choice to lead us forward,” said Board Chair Shelley Burke Attebery. “His community connections and expertise with counseling, grants management, and equestrian therapy will guide The Red Barn into its next chapter.”
