“High cholesterol in athletes is not automatically a diagnosis. It’s a data point.”
When athletes (especially endurance athletes) see elevated LDL on routine labs, the conversation often jumps straight to restriction:
👉 Eat less fat.
👉 Increase fiber.
👉 Lose weight.
👉 Consider medication.
But athletes aren’t the general population.
In many cases, high cholesterol in athletes may reflect metabolic adaptation to low energy availability (REDs) rather than excess intake.
Before treating a number in isolation, we should be asking a different question:
❓ What is the body adapting to?
In my newest blog, I break down:
• Why high cholesterol is showing up more in athletes
• How underfueling can alter lipid metabolism
• What clinicians and athletes should assess before recommending restriction
If you work with athletes—or are one—this is an important perspective.
