There are three approaches to healing:

⬇️ Top-Down- talking, using cognitive techniques

⬆️ Bottom-Up - somatic approach, using the body to heal

➡️ Sideways- Mindfulness, meditation

These are simplified definitions. Each one approaches and affects the nervous system in a different way. No one way is better, but most modalities focus on the Top-Down approach and neglect using the body. Trauma gets stored in the body, into our entire nervous system and often hidden from our cognitive abilities. So top-down is only partially effective.

Involving the body and being aware of the body-mind, allows us to use our entire neurobiology. We can process emotions, move energy, identify sub personalities, and make the unconscious conscious.

The coaching methodology I have been practicing involves all three approaches. Transformation doesn’t happen unless our three brains are in coherence. Our limbic system emotional brain, primal/reptilian sensing brain, and cognitive thinking brain all need to communicate with each other.

This is why often we say we want something, for example to save money. We write it down, say affirmations, and declare the exact amount we need to save. Then, after a stressful day and scrolling on Instagram, we find ourselves impulse shopping. This happens because while our thinking mind was in agreement to this desire, our Limbic and Primal brains had a deeper commitment to the way impulse shopping feels.

In these coaching techniques, we go deeper, past the default system and make conscious what is holding us back from what we desire. We then integrate those parts and give them a new function, while giving ourselves permission to make choices that are in alignment with our desire.

Are you ready to bring the body-mind alive? Use pleasure to heal and integrate? And find more satisfaction and sacredness in the richness and depth of life?

Couple’s Massage Lesson

I love sharing my wisdom with others, especially those in relationships. Our relationship is the central point of our entire life. Humans are meant to attach and can find incredible healing within the container of relationship. Also, how we are relating with those closest to us impacts how we relate to others. You’re really doing a favor to your communities and the world by making your relationship a priority.

A great way to connect with your partner is through massage. So much of the time, we associate intimacy with meaning s*x, and s*xual touch only. Intimacy is far more than this, and both men and women enjoy nons*xual touch. I’ve heard from many clients that share “my partner tries to work on my tight areas, but they get tired, or they just don’t do it right”. I’ve had some that just can’t make it in more than once a month, or even longer, for a multitude of reasons, but would absolutely benefit from the magic of massage more frequently.

So, receiving a massage lesson as a couple can be such an amazing investment in your own health as well as the wellbeing of the relationship! Not to mention a really fun date idea!

What to expect:

One partner will be on the table first. The other will be learning hands-on techniques with me while we massage together. The partner on the table will be receiving a lovely four-handed massage from me and the person they love. There will be communication between both partners; getting feedback from the partner on the table. Then, a short break between massages before the second partner hops on the table to repeat. Both will feel amazing, have learned new skills, and will be given a handout for relationship and intimacy building skills homework.

Why?

Massage is great for your health! The benefits are countless, but in relationship it helps with bonding and feel-good chemicals of oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin. Stress-relief aspects help with more grounded communication, loving thoughts towards one another, and better s*x! Massage from your partner helps strengthen connection, deepen feelings of intimacy, and get to know your person on a deeper level.

If you want to change your life, you don’t have to do a complete overhaul with lofty goals, or expect it to shift with the snap of your fingers.

Just making small changes over time will yield incredible results.

The beauty of chipping away at one area in your life is that it will impact every other aspect of your life. We are holistic and integrated beings. We are not machines with parts that work independently of one another. Every “piece” is interconnected and interrelated.

Our physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental systems are like pillars holding our temple together. When one suffers, the other systems feel the tension. When we focus on even one area at a time, the others improve as well.

For example, if someone comes to me, as a massage therapist, and their body is full of tension which causes pain, I can help relieve their adhesions with bodywork. The physical pain wasn’t just created by overuse, but it can be a factor. When we hold onto mental and emotional tension, it shows up in our physical body. Getting the massage not only relieves physical tension, it reduces mental and emotional stress and allows energetic flow to freely move. Massage also benefits spiritual health through human touch and connection. Each system is affected through one choice- getting a massage.

Another example, getting regular physical activity, even as simple as a 20 minute walk, affects all systems. When we are physically engaged, our mental functions operate much better. Better blood flow to our brains, the release of neurotransmitters, and taking in our surroundings all affect our mental capacity.

Getting our bodies moving also allows us to move through our emotions that weren’t processed earlier. Emotion equals energy in motion, and moving through the fight/flight stress response allows us to engage with our sensations instead of repressing them.

Spiritually, when I personally go for a walk, I feel connected to nature, where I found God. Even if God doesn’t resonate, knowing that you are alive, like everything around you, brings on a deeper feeling of connection. Just going on a walk can create a cascade of habits that uplift, inspire, and create health in your life.

It doesn’t have to start on the physical plane, however, it can be the simplest place to start. Starting on the spiritual pillar, one can realize the gift and beauty of their body, deciding from that point to start taking better care of their temple of the body. Expanding the mental system by reading a book on a new skill, health, spirituality, or understanding the role of emotions leads to improvement in any of these systems.

Allowing ourselves to feel and express our emotions, getting honest about the feedback we are receiving from our environment can be the catalyst to change it.

Nothing within us is separate; just as nothing without is separate either. We are interconnected with ourselves as we are with every living thing in this world. Small shifts make huge differences in our lives.

Savannah Freemyer, L.M.T., I.W.L.C.

📷Defining wellness as wholeness and balance in all four systems: Mental, Emotional, Physical and Spiritual, Savannah has made it her passion to create an integrated approach to serving others in their healing journeys. She received her Associates in Occupational Studies in Therapeutic Massage Therapy from Heritage College. She is the business owner of Rainstone Massage and Bodywork, specializing in Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Raindrop Technique ™, and Hot Stones. She also offers Reiki Therapy and is a Level III Usui Reiki practitioner. With these practices, Savannah discovered a talent for encouraging and seeing patterns in others. She gravitated toward the life coaching field and graduated from the Integrative Wellness Academy adding Integrative Wellness and Life Coach to her skill set. To weave everything together, her love for yoga grew from a much-needed hobby to profession and received 200RYT hours through The Zen Zone’s yoga teacher training program. She includes other elements into her practice including Young Living therapeutic-grade essential oils, H**pWorx CBD-rich H**p Oil products, guided meditations, and healing intention cards to create a unique and customized plan for her clients.

She sees her past obstacles not as something to hide or regret, but as opportunities for growth. Being a nature lover and drawing from metaphors of the Earth, she believes finding ourselves in dark places not as a site of burial, but that we have been planted. She strongly believes that with self-care, self-awareness, and an openness to connect with ourselves and others is the key to healing. Life is meant to be lived with freedom from our limiting beliefs and come from a place of authenticity. Savannah encourages those around her to fully express themselves from a place of non-judgment.
