About 2 weeks ago, Sean got peritonitis. Discovered that there was a hole in his catheter, which ended up being an easy fix, and they were able to replace that part of the catheter. He was given antibiotics and continued to do antibiotics throughout the week. He was feeling a little bit better by Thanksgiving but still not back to normal. By Saturday, he was in excruciating pain and was unable to drain. After we spent two hours at the dialysis center, where the nurse was trying different methods to get him to drain, I took him to the ER.
I have never experienced a time at the ER where we got into a room as quickly as we did on Saturday. The triage staff there was amazing at expediting what was going on. Sean‘s blood pressure was extremely high, 188/104, so they did an EKG and once they got him into his room, gave him an IV and pain medication and admitted him. He had an x-ray to make sure that the catheter wasn’t out of place. And they talked about possibly doing surgery.
By Monday he had a procedure to try to clear the blockage in the catheter, but there was a lot of scar tissue. So he was still unable to do dialysis.
Last night he had surgery that successfully cleaned up the scar tissue and allowed for the catheter to work. He’s been able to resume dialysis again. They are monitoring him and he’s just waiting to see when they are OK to release him.
January will mark 3 years since he started dialysis and it’s been more than 3 years since he was put on the list for a kidney transplant.
