🌟 Becoming a Critical Consumer of Autism Information 🌟

With so much information about autism shared online and through social media, it can be hard to know what’s accurate. Unfortunately, some sources promote misinformation or “quick fixes” that aren’t supported by evidence.

At the Kentucky Autism Training Center, we encourage families, educators, and community members to become critical consumers of autism information. Reliable, evidence-based practices make a real difference in supporting autistic individuals.

Here are a few tips to help evaluate what you read or hear:
✅ Consider the Source – Check credentials, intent, and bias.
✅ Read Beyond the Headline – Headlines can mislead; read the full story.
✅ Evaluate the Evidence – Look for rigorous research, not just testimonials.
✅ Check Against Reliable Sources – Confirm with expert consensus.

🧠 Prevent misinformation from sticking—stay informed through trusted sources like KYAUTISM.org

LIHEAP Fall Subsidy Heating Assistance Now Available

Kentucky households can apply for LIHEAP Fall Subsidy from Nov. 3 to Dec. 12, 2025, to help with heating costs during the colder months.

Eligible households with income up to 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines may qualify for a one-time benefit. This program covers heating costs for electric, natural gas, propane, coal, wood, or fuel oil. Benefits are paid directly to the energy vendor, and no disconnect notice or past-due bill is required to apply.

Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect eligibility. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Contact Central Community Action Council to apply. To find your local outreach office, visit ckcac.org or call your local County office:

Breckinridge 270-765-6813
Washington 859-336-7766
Grayson 270-259-3500

Hardin 270-986-2724
Meade 270-422-2545
LaRue 270-358-3937
Marion 270-692-6411

Eligibility Requirements

Households must meet program eligibility criteria, including income requirements, to qualify for assistance. The Fall Subsidy program does not require a disconnect notice, past-due bill, or eviction notice to apply. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect eligibility for the Fall Subsidy.

All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at the time of application:

1. Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.

2. Proof of all household’s (all members) income from the preceding month.

3. Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord if electric is included in your rent, statement from utility company if you participate in a Pre-Pay Electric Program.

4. The account number and name on the account for main heating fuel sources and electric bill.

Community Action Kentucky administers LIHEAP in partnership with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, which receives funding as a pass-through block grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

📋 What to Do After an Autism Diagnosis

Receiving an autism diagnosis can bring up many questions: What happens next? Where do I find support? What resources are available?

Our partners at the Kentucky Advisory Council on Autism (KYACA) have created a helpful resource sheet to guide families through the next steps after receiving an autism diagnosis.

This resource includes:
✅ Important information about services and supports
✅ Guidance on navigating systems
✅ Connections to community resources
✅ Next steps for families

Whether you're a caregiver who recently received a diagnosis or a professional supporting families through this process, this resource sheet can be a valuable tool.
