🌟 The UP & UP: Proton Pump Inhibitors and Nutrient Absorption 🌟

Are you or someone you know managing gastric reflux with an antacid? 👀

👉PPIs, such as omeprazole and lansoprazole, are commonly prescribed medications used to reduce stomach acid and treat conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and heartburn. 💡 While they are effective in managing these conditions, long-term use of PPIs can potentially interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients. 🤔

🔍 Here's what you need to know:

⭐️Vitamin B12: Stomach acid helps release vitamin B12 from food, so reducing acid levels with PPIs may lead to a deficiency over time. Vitamin B12 is crucial for nerve function and the production of red blood cells.

⭐️Calcium: Lower stomach acid can affect calcium absorption, which is essential for maintaining strong bones. This could increase the risk of fractures, especially in older adults.

⭐️Magnesium: Prolonged use of PPIs might lead to low magnesium levels, which can cause muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, and other symptoms.

⭐️Iron: Stomach acid aids in the conversion of dietary iron to a form that is easier to absorb, so reduced acid levels may impact iron absorption, potentially leading to anemia and/or other symptoms.

If you are taking PPIs, it’s important to discuss these potential effects with your healthcare provider. They may recommend monitoring nutrient levels or adjusting your diet to ensure you’re getting enough of these vital nutrients. In some cases, supplementation might be necessary.

Remember, never stop or adjust your medication without consulting your healthcare provider.

🌟 Health Tip 🌟 Understanding Eye Twitching: The Role of Magnesium and Calcium

Have you ever experienced that annoying, involuntary twitching of the eyelid? 🤔 You're not alone! It can be irritating and distracting, but it's usually harmless. Eye twitching, also known as myokymia, is common and can be caused by various factors, including stress, fatigue, and nutritional imbalances.
One of the lesser-known contributors to eye twitching is a deficiency in essential minerals like magnesium and calcium. These minerals play crucial roles in muscle function and nerve health:

🔹 Magnesium helps regulate muscle contractions and relaxations. A deficiency can lead to muscle spasms and increased nerve excitability, which might cause those pesky eyelid twitches.

🔹 Calcium is vital for muscle contractions and nerve signaling. Low levels of calcium can disrupt normal muscle function, potentially leading to twitching.

To combat this, ensure your diet includes plenty of magnesium-rich foods like nuts, seeds, whole grains, and leafy greens. For calcium, consider dairy products, fortified plant-based milks, and leafy greens.

If you're frequently experiencing eye twitching, it might be worth consulting with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and dietary habits. They can help determine if a magnesium or calcium deficiency might be contributing to the issue.

Remember, maintaining a balanced diet and managing stress can go a long way in keeping those eyelid twitches at bay! 😊

If your eye twitching persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it might be time to check in with a healthcare professional. Feel free to reach out to my office for a consultation. ☎️ 662-820-0079 or go online to make an appointment at upshurclinic.com.

God has a plan. And though you may try to go the way you think is best…He is going to work HIS plan out! I have been in training for this for years! After 22 years in nursing…this is what I was being prepared to do! Bedside nursing in ICU and L&D helped me to master the technique of remaining calm in a storm. Nursing informatics trained me on the technical side of the medical field. At the wound center, I was taught by fire to be a jack of all trades and a master of none as the clinical manager. After spending 9 years in rural health clinics from Arkansas to the Mississippi Delta, I simply learned how to manage everything! God has opened and closed so many doors to get me here! Thank you to all my patients who have been eagerly awaiting! It is with much enthusiasm I announce the GRAND opening of the Upshur Clinic!
