Archetypal psychology is the study of universal inner patterns that shape how we think, behave, and relate.

The concept comes from Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung who believed that beneath our personal stories, we share symbolic patterns called archetypes. These are not mystical beings. They are psychological energies.

You’ve seen them everywhere:
• The Hero
• The Mother
• The Rebel
• The Orphan
• The Warrior
• The Healer
• The Shadow

They show up in movies. In religion. In mythology. And in therapy sessions.

Why This Matters:
Many of us unconsciously live inside one dominant archetype.

“I always have to save everyone.”
→ The Rescuer.

“I push people away before they can hurt me.”
→ The Protector.

“I feel like life just happens to me.”
→ The Victim.

These aren’t personality flaws.
They’re patterns. Archetypal psychology helps us see: What role am I unconsciously playing? Is it protecting me? Is it limiting me?
And do I want to keep living from this energy?

How This Connects to Healing
In trauma work, in Internal Family Systems, and in shadow integration — we are often working archetypally.
We help: The Wounded Child feel safe. The Protector relax. The Warrior step forward. The Sovereign reclaim leadership.

Sometimes what looks like “victim mode” is actually a protective part working overtime.

In Internal Family Systems (IFS), we understand that no part of us is bad. Some parts are simply trying to protect us from pain we once couldn’t handle.

If a part of you learned early that you were powerless…
it may unconsciously recreate situations where:
• There is a villain
• There is a hero
• And you are stuck in the middle

Because if I am the victim,
then I don’t have to risk responsibility. I don’t have to risk failure. I don’t have to risk my own power.

That part isn’t dramatic.
It isn’t weak.
It’s young.
It formed when you needed it.

But here’s the gentle truth:
Protective parts were brilliant strategies at 7. They are outdated survival plans at 47.

You are not meant to stay frozen in the story that once kept you safe. In IFS, healing doesn’t come from eliminating parts.
It comes from Self leading the system. And Self is calm.
Compassionate. Clear.
Courageous.

When Self leads:
• The “victim” part relaxes.
• The need for a villain softens.
• The fantasy of rescue dissolves.

You don’t heal by finding a better villain. You heal by strengthening your Self.
Because the hero isn’t external.
The hero is your Self.

You are responsible for one person from the day you are born until the day you are gone.
One.

And that doesn’t mean you’re alone. It means you are powerful.

No one is coming to rescue you.
And the beautiful news is —
you don’t need them to.
You are already equipped.

Trauma Isn’t What Happened.
It’s What Your Nervous System Learned.

Trauma recovery isn’t about “getting over it.”
It’s about teaching your body that it’s safe now.
When you’ve lived through something overwhelming —
your nervous system adapts.
It might learn to:
Stay on high alert
Shut down emotionally
People-please to survive
Dissociate to cope
Numb out to feel less
These responses aren’t weaknesses.

They’re brilliant survival strategies. But what protected you then may be exhausting you now.

Healing isn’t forcing yourself to relive everything.
It’s slowly, safely rewiring the system.

There’s a new kind of burnout everyone is whispering about right now. Not the hustle kind. Not the corporate kind.

The heart kind.
The “I care so much I’m exhausted” kind.
The kind that hits people who give a damn.

And here’s the wild thing:
It’s not weakness. It’s physiology.
Your nervous system wasn’t designed to run a full-time emotional emergency room.

As a therapist, I can tell you:
