After a building inspection conducted by the state last fall, AMOREM has increased its fundraising goal to open a hospice patient care unit from $8.1 million to $8.3 million.

AMOREM held an open house for the AMOREM SECU Patient Care Unit of the High Country back in July 2025. Shortly after representatives from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Division of Health Service Regulation inspected the building.

Upon inspection, some issues were noted that would require additional construction to ensure the facility was to code. Construction on those items is set to be completed by March 6 at the estimated cost of an additional $200k to the organization’s original $8.1 million budget.

AMOREM has been actively fundraising for the patient care unit since fall of 2021. The building is named after the State Employees Credit Union, who gifted $1.5 million toward the project from its foundation.

Through community support, corporate gifts and grants, AMOREM has raised right at $6.5 million toward its goal, which has increased from $8.1 million to $8.3 million due to the unexpected expenses that occurred after the facility’s initial inspection.

AMOREM Veteran Volunteer Ed Van Horn honors an Army veteran patient with a simple but meaningful 'Veterans Honoring Veterans' ceremony. AMOREM veteran volunteers visit veteran patients to present them with a handmade veteran lapghan, small American flag, a certificate of appreciation and a lapel pin as a way to honor their military service.

These beautiful lapghans are made by volunteers! Would you like to make veteran lapghans for hospice patients? Contact volunteer services at 828.754.0101 to learn more.

AMOREM, along with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), proudly celebrates one of the nation’s largest professions. March is National Social Work Month and this year’s theme, “Social Workers: Uplift, Defend, Transform,” highlights the profession's core mission to enhance human well-being, meet basic needs and empower vulnerable populations, especially during challenging times of economic, political and societal division.

Social workers honor diversity and the unique experiences and needs of each individual. The role of the hospice social worker is to provide emotional support and counseling to patients and their families as they cope with the challenges of dealing with a terminal illness.

Hospice social workers can provide information regarding community resources and offer assistance related to advance directives, financial and legal needs. Social workers can provide advocacy and facilitate communication and assist with crisis management.

“AMOREM proudly extends our appreciation for the professional contributions of our medical social work staff,” says April Moore, CEO. “They play an essential role on our interdisciplinary team.”

Please join us in thanking these valuable members of the AMOREM team, as well as all the social workers who serve throughout our nation.

Advance care planning is a process to help your loved ones know how to speak for you if you are ever unable to make your own medical decisions. It is planning for the unexpected.

AMOREM, formerly Burke Hospice and Palliative Care and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, partners with Thrive, formerly the Caldwell Senior Center, to offer an advance care planning workshop at no cost to the community on the second Thursday of each month. The next workshop will be held March 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the Thrive in Lenoir.

Advance Directives: Living wills and healthcare powers of attorney are gifts to your family. Deciding, discussing and documenting your healthcare wishes helps ensure your healthcare wishes are known and honored. It also gives you peace of mind that you have made appropriate preparations. Notaries and witnesses will be available to help anyone who wishes to complete their documents at the workshop.
Space is limited and registration is required. For more information, or to register, call 828.758.2883.

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference? Do you have the compassionate spirit needed to be a companion for someone’s journey? AMOREM is hosting three opportunities for a two-day training session in March for adults who are interested in becoming hospice volunteers.

Currently, there is a need for volunteers to provide companionship to patients in the patient’s homes or long-term-care facilities. Other specific needs include volunteers who can provide transportation to doctors’ appointments and shopping excursions for patients, etc., veterans to visit and make Veterans Honoring Veterans presentations to patients who are veterans and individuals to volunteer in AMOREM’s thrift store, Thrifts & Gifts.

Attendance is required at each session and meals will be provided. For more information or to register for the March 2026 adult volunteer training opportunity, contact us at 828.754.0101 or contact Cyndi Akins at cakins@amoremsupport.org.

—What I love most about my job is the feeling of knowing I am part of making someone’s life a little bit easier during a difficult time. I love the team I work with and the volunteers that have such huge hearts and give their time to helping others.
—My first job was at the age of 14 and all through high school. I worked at a local country club in Fayetteville, NC, where I signed guests in, prepared and served food and helped set up community events.
—My favorite way to spend the day off is spending time with my husband and our three girls, but I also love waking up early enjoying a hot tea or coffee and enjoying some quiet me-time.
—What makes me quirky? Well, I guess if you ask anyone that knows me well they would say I am a creature of habit and I like to eat at same times each day or at least pretty close to time.
