FASCIAL COMPARTMENTS

[FASCIAL ANATOMY - OSTEOPATHIC APPROACH]

Posterior view of the pelvic region reveals interesting fascial links from thorax to pelvis to lower extremity.

This view is much closer to reality that many “muscle only” pictures.

The concept of named muscles is a manifestation of isolationist dissectors of years past who likely equated their findings on a dissection table to that of a butcher.

Protein “cuts” seemed to take shape and were named as muscles. However, this illustration shows the real anatomy which is an interconnected web of connective tissue that happens to have “compartments” that house contractile protein bundles.

The left side shows the fascial compartments for the glute max, semimembranosus and biceps femoris. On the right the compartment for the quadratus femoris is shown with the muscle protein removed.

One can easily see how muscle chains are the true reality as no muscle is isolated but is in fact just compartments along a much larger fascial system.

This concept can change the clinician’s approach to myofascial therapy or acupuncture. The best therapeutic effects may come from targeting fascial lines or chains rather than individual muscles only. Always think links.

I spent the past three days attending a positional muscle release class and Im so excited to start using this new technique in my therapy room. It is a very gentle technique that works with bodies tension patterns to increase movement and function throughout whole lines of tension. Call, text or book online!

❓ How reliable is my MRI ❓
It has been said that a picture is worth 1,000 words. But what if the picture was an MRI and those words resulted in increased harm, medical overuse, and a cascade of events leading to more pain and disability.

Unfortunately, MRI’s have been a gold standard diagnostic tool for many orthopedic conditions. However, in this simple case study you can see the high variability and inconsistencies with one individual receiving 10 MRIs at 10 different testing sites.

MRIs are great at ruling out any significant and dangerous red flags such as tumors and fractures, but never justify the pain a person is experiencing.

An MRI is simply a small pixel in the grand picture of your life. Via

The new year brought a new therapy table and a high speed oscillating massager to my practice. The new therapy table is 3 inches wider than my previous one for increased comfort. The oscillating massager is perfect for activating inhibited muscles as well as warming up soft tissue and it's quickly becoming popular with clients.

Two weeks ago I took a class on joint capsular release techniques and am amazed at the results I see in my clients through these techniques. If you are experiencing pain and/or limited range of motion in any of your joints the joint capsule is likely to be involved, along with muscles, and I can help!
