Radiation treatment can be life saving, but it may leave a lasting mark on healthy tissue. That is called late radiation tissue injury, and it can show up as pain, bleeding, skin breakdown, jaw problems, pelvic issues, or even bone damage.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is one tool used to support healing in radiation damaged tissue. Inside a pressurized chamber, you breathe concentrated oxygen, which can help:
• Support new blood vessel growth
• Improve oxygen delivery in injured tissue
• Assist collagen and tissue repair
• Support certain cases of bone infection (osteomyelitis)
HBOT is not a cure and it is not right for everyone, but for carefully selected patients it can be an important part of a larger care plan.
At Delaware Hyperbarics in Lewes, Delaware, we work with chronic wounds, radiation injury and radiation damage, and bone infection in coordination with your oncologist and other specialists.
