With the trails at Cape Henlopen State Park opening up, it's time to dust off the bike! 🚲 However, an improperly fitted bike is a top cause of knee and hip pain.

Ensure your seat height is adjusted so that there is a very slight bend in your knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke. If your seat is too low, it puts excessive pressure on the kneecap (patella).

Is knee pain keeping you off the trails? Schedule with our sports medicine specialists at First State Orthopaedics- Southern Division: https://delawarebonedocs.com/appointments

Is the warmer weather calling you back to the golf course or the tennis courts? 🏌️‍♂️🎾 After a less active winter, jumping straight into high-intensity sports is the leading cause of early-spring strains.

Avoid "too much, too soon" by implementing a gradual ramp-up period. Start with 50% of your normal intensity during the first week to allow your tendons and ligaments to adapt to the new stress. From spring cleaning to yard work, March puts a lot of demand on our hands and wrists. ✍️ Repetitive motions like scrubbing or raking can lead to tendonitis or carpal tunnel flare-ups.

Tip: Use ergonomic tools with larger grips and take "micro-breaks" every 20 minutes to stretch your fingers and wrists.

Whether you’re working from home or scrolling through social media, "Tech Neck" is a real concern. 📱 Sustained forward leaning can put significant pressure on your cervical spine.

Tip: Follow the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and roll your shoulders back to reset your posture.

Does your knee 'predict' the rain? 🌦️ It’s not just a myth—rapid changes in barometric pressure during Delaware’s spring weather can cause joint tissues to expand, leading to increased achiness and stiffness.

To manage spring flare-ups, stay hydrated and dress in warm layers for those chilly coastal mornings. If lingering joint pain is stopping you from enjoying the walk to the beach, come see our fellowship-trained team for a consultation.

Warm weather means the courts are calling! But a sudden return to pickleball or tennis can lead to the dreaded Tennis Elbow.

How to protect yourself:
Warm up dynamically: Don't start with a serve; start with 5 minutes of brisk walking and arm circles.
Check your grip: A grip that is too tight can strain the tendons in your elbow. Strengthen & Stretch: Incorporate gentle forearm stretches before and after play to improve flexibility and reduce the pull on the bone.

Experiencing court-side pain? Don't play through it. See our sports medicine team to get back to the match: https://delawarebonedocs.com/sports_medicine.php

Did you know that nearly one-quarter of all the bones in your body are located in your hands and wrists? 🖐️ With 27 individual bones working together, your hands are some of the most complex structures in your entire musculoskeletal system.

Tip: Because they are so intricate, spring tasks like gripping heavy garden tools or using manual clippers can lead to small "overuse" injuries. If you’re feeling tingling, numbness, or a dull ache in your thumb or wrist after a day of yard work, it’s your body’s way of saying it’s time for a break.

Don’t let your first weekend of spring gardening lead to a back injury!

Before you start lifting heavy bags of mulch or soil in your yard, remember the golden rule: Always lift with your knees, not your back. Keep the load close to your body and avoid twisting while carrying heavy items. Ready to get back to the garden pain-free?
