Even though 50/50 custody splits are often seen as ideal, they may not always be in the best interests of a child. As we discuss in our latest article, developmental "yellow flags" such as regression and executive functioning issues call for reevaluating the schedule.

If we cling to a 50/50 split despite evidence that it no longer serves the child, we may prioritize "parental rights" over "childhood stability." A responsive, attuned parenting style doesn't mean failing to recognize when it is time to switch from a 50/50 schedule to a 70/30 or 60/40 schedule.

Are we using mental health language in ways that help or sometimes unintentionally confuse?

In her latest Cape Gazette commentary, Dr. Katherine Elder, founder of Delaware Psychological Services, explores why it’s important to bring more clarity and nuance to conversations about trauma and emotional health. The piece reflects on how broad awareness of mental health has helped many people feel seen, while also reminding us that not every difficult experience is clinical trauma, and that understanding the difference matters.

When we talk about mental health with greater care, we create more room for understanding, less stigma, and stronger pathways to support.

We invite you to read the article and join the conversation:

In an age when we seem to be intently focused on emotional health (for better or worse), some mental health terminology has gained broad acceptance – and often is used somewhat loosely and inappropriately. We talk about being “depressed” when we’re...

According to researchers, positive mental well-being can be described by six core components: meaning and purpose, life satisfaction, self-acceptance, connection, autonomy, and happiness. By emphasizing these aspects rather than the absence of distress, this new definition provides a clearer framework for interventions and policies.

Researchers have identified the key dimensions of positive mental health, showing it involves much more than the absence of mental illness.

April has been designated National Stress Awareness Month since 1992. Though the world has changed dramatically in those decades, the mission has remained the same: to raise public awareness of stress and its causes.

April has been designated National Stress Awareness Month since 1992. As the world has changed, the mission remains more vital than ever: to raise public awareness about modern stress causes and cures.

Brain cells known as astrocytes, which have a star shape, are now widely recognized as important in brain function. Recent research suggests that targeting astrocytes could improve the effectiveness of treatments for anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

A growing body of research suggests astrocytes, star-shaped brain cells once dismissed as support players, may lead the way to more precise and effective psychiatric drugs.

CAMP Rehoboth and Delaware Psychological Services LLC are partnering to provide no-cost / low-cost behavioral health support to Sussex County LGBTQ+ (including gender-expansive) youth 13-18 years of age and their families through funds provided by a Highmark Small Grant-BCBS.

LGBTQ+ youth are at risk for feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety. The shortage of affirming providers and rising anti-LBGTQIA+ hostility have compounded mental health risks and family stress. This partnership seeks to expand support and services for LGBTQ+ youth and their families in Sussex County.

Youth and/or their families who are interested in accessing individual counseling, support groups or educational workshops are encouraged to call 302-227-5620 for more information on this program.

Every recovery story touches more than one life.

In this video, a member of our community shares her experience growing up as the child of two parents in recovery: what it meant, what it felt like, and how it shaped her.

Stories like this are at the heart of Voices of Recovery. Not perfect stories. Not polished stories. Just real ones.

We’re inviting others in our community to share their experiences too, either through video, writing, art, music, or however it feels right to you.

You don’t have to have everything figured out. You just have to be willing.

In a recent study, it was found that people consistently underestimate the value and enjoyment of small talk and casual conversations. According to the research, engaging in these interactions, even on seemingly boring topics, can improve mood, create a sense of belonging, and decrease loneliness.

Engaging in conversations, even on topics we think will be boring, can lead to surprisingly meaningful interactions.
