This is pre-print, ie., not yet peer-reviewed, and in vitro, ie., one chemical component in licorice root out of the hundreds it's known to contain is isolated, modified, and introduced outside of the body in a petri dish to covid parts, vs being tested within the complexities of the human system, but still exciting to see 1000s of years of human use being translated in this way. And, the amounts used are beneath what's frequently consumed in tea. In a recent bioRxiv* preprint paper, researchers from Germany analyzed aqueous licorice root extract for its neutralizing activity against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro. They identified glycyrrhizin, the primary active ingredient in the root, and revealed the underlying mechanism of viral neutralization.

Hi, guys. It's Joan (Plant Wisdom Within). *PLEASE AMPLIFY!*

I need to raise about $20,000 ASAP. Approx $16,000 to get radiation treatment started and approx $3000 to cover housing during treatment.

I may need to pay as much as $33,000 out-of pocket to get the treatment my oncology team and I believe is the best. This proton therapy treatment is a very targeted form of radiation therapy which is as or more effective than other radiations. Its value is in its ability to reduce collateral damage to surrounding healthy non-tumor tissues. The tumor they’re irradiating looks like a huge glial cell or a kohlrabi in my chest. It branches out around my lungs, esophagus, thyroid, and heart. I don’t want to survive Hodgkin’s lymphoma only to have the treatment I used to survive it kill me later. I want as little risk of thyroid disease, lung pathology, breast cancer, heart damage, esophageal dysfunction, and heart disease as possible.

My team at Penn is on the cutting edge of this better cancer-care technology. There are lots of scientific papers to back up the viability of proton therapy here. But, since it’s a newer technology, there aren’t as many long-term studies and it’s more expensive so the insurance company won’t agree yet to pay. If we can raise $16k (roughly half the cost of treatment), I can get started and the hospital will continue to fight for my right to be reimbursed. The insurance company may or may not then pay a portion of the remainder under pressure from the hospital. So I don’t know if I’m asking for a full long-term 36k, but I’m definitely asking for 20k right now. I’m at the end of the window when I should have already begun receiving proton therapy, so this is a timely ask.

Please spread this request throughout your networks. A little from a lot of people can do a lot of good right now and years into the future. Thanks for considering me and my kids in the middle of what is a very hard time for a lot of you right now, too.
