As individuals age, they encounter life changes that can significantly impact mental health, particularly related to depression and anxiety. These conditions are not an inevitable part of aging, yet they are common and often underrecognized.
Statistics show that approximately 14% of adults age 70+ live with a mental disorder, with depression and anxiety being the most common. The percentage of adults with any symptoms of anxiety and depression increased from 15.6% to 21.4% between 2019 and 2022. These statistics are continuing to rise in 2025
In addition to medication and therapy many lifestyle changes can help with symptoms of depression and anxiety such as:
-Physical Activity: Walking, yoga, or strength training improves mood and reduces anxiety.
-Healthy Diet: Nutrient-rich foods and limited alcohol use support brain and body health.
-Sleep Hygiene: Consistent sleep schedules help regulate mood.
-Social Engagement: Participation in community groups, volunteering, or faith-based activities combats loneliness.
