“He has a heart of gold, and it shows through his work." This is how a patient described Ron, a sonographer at MHMMC Biddeford/Sanford, who recently earned a PETAL Award for his kind, professional and patient-centered care. The PETAL Award recognizes, rewards and celebrates the special skills and compassionate care provided by our nursing support staff.

Ron received two nominations, the first from the mother of a patient who noted his ability to keep her daughter relaxed in a difficult situation. She shared:

“Ron was very thorough explaining to her the imaging process and actually made her laugh at a time that she wanted to cry. Ron also had a student that day and was so kind and helpful to her. It made me so happy to see that he is teaching not only the job tasks but also how to engage with empathy to patients. When we left the building, my daughter turned and said to me, ‘Mama, he was so nice and funny!’”

Another patient said:

“Ron met me with respect and kindness and it remained throughout the appointment. First time anyone has ever explained what they were doing and asked if I wanted to watch and explained the images in terms I could comprehend. Ron was very kind and professional. Thank you, Ron, and God Bless.”

Ron is retiring from full-time work this month after nearly 30 years with MaineHealth. Congratulations, Ron, and we wish you well in retirement.

Quick history moment.

Rudolf Virchow helped shape how we understand disease at the tissue level. His work gave us concepts like parenchyma and Virchow’s triad, language that still underpins how we think about pathology and vascular disease today.

Not bad for ideas that predate ultrasound by decades.

Who’s ready to celebrate… again? Happy Rad Tech Week to All Who Make Imaging Possible!

It’s Radiologic Technology Week, when radiology departments everywhere celebrate the people who make medical imaging happen — and yes, that includes sonographers too.

We know… sometimes we’re the “not-quite-radiology” corner of the department. Our patients don’t glow, our studies don’t come with radiation badges, and our “equipment warm-up” involves gel instead of lead aprons.

But at the end of the day, we’re all part of the same story: using imaging to make invisible things visible. Whether it’s sound waves, x-rays, or magnets, it takes skill and teamwork to turn images into answers.

So here’s to every sonographer, radiologic technologist, CT tech, MRI tech, nuclear medicine specialist, and radiologist out there. Thanks for reminding the world that images save lives — and for giving us another reason to celebrate the art and science of what we do.
