Carmen Alice Gilbert (née Lavoie), 92, of Lewiston, Maine, was at home in hospice care when she died on Thursday, 4 February, after a long illness. Born on 4 January 1929, in Lewiston, to Eugene and Simone Lavoie (née Boutin), Carmen attended St. Mary’s School and Lewiston High School.

On 22 May 1948, she married Wilfrid Maurice Gilbert, Jr., at St. Mary’s Church in Lewiston. They were together for 48 years.

In her younger years, she worked in textile mills and later, at Bonon Shoe in Auburn, where she sewed running shoes.

Carmen's hobbies included travel and cooking. She visited Canada, England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Bermuda, Florida, and Indiana. She succeeded in communicating, even when not knowing the local language, and one time, persuaded a train conductor in a village in Germany to delay a train so the rest of her group could board. Passionate about cooking, Carmen would explain technique, in addition to providing a recipe.

Ever fascinated by medicine, Carmen once gave her doctor a clinically accurate description of a stroke that she had recently suffered.

Active in politics, Carmen participated in local Democratic Party presidential caucuses. In 1980, she rounded up votes in her ward for Ted Kennedy. In 1984, after she opened her home to two Mondale campaign volunteers, it became an informal campaign center. She attended the caucus to support Hillary Clinton in 2008 because she was deeply committed to the advancement of women in politics.

Carmen is survived by her daughter, Nancy Gilbert Cote and husband Paul Cote of Lewiston; her son, Gary Gilbert of Jackson Heights, New York; sisters-in-law Connie Lavoie and Lois Gilbert of Lewiston, and Lorraine Lavoie of Michigan; many nieces and nephews; and friend of the family Marie LeBlanc and her daughter, Shauna. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; her siblings, Richard Lavoie, Eugene “Pete” Lavoie, and Yvette Henault; and a son-in-law, John Murdoch Matthew of Jackson Heights, New York.

At a later date, a private committal service will be held at the Central Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, where her cremated remains will be interred next to her husband’s crypt.

Donations may be made in her memory to:

AUBURN - Born Debra Marie Louise Kiekbusch in Saginaw, MI on July 17th, 1956 to her parents William Gerald Kiekbusch and Donna Mae Kiekbusch, both of whom have preceded her in death. Debbie passed into the arms of her Savior on January 22nd, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her sister Pamela Sherry (husband Steve Sherry) of Stuart, FL, her brother William James (Jim) Kiekbusch of Phoenix, AZ, her cousin Janet Hecht of Livonia, MI, her son Jason Reblin (wife Crystal Reblin) and her grandchildren Alexander Reblin and Maximillian Reblin of Lewiston, ME, her son Mikel Reblin and her grandchild Joey Bennett of Keller, TX. She was also survived by many loving nieces, brothers-and-sisters in-law, and friends as dear to her as family.

A member of the Court Street Baptist Church in Auburn, ME, Debbie was a faithful servant of the Lord and was loved by many within her congregation. She enjoyed participating wherever she could as her health allowed and took great pride even in the smallest of contributions that she could make. Even in her most trying times, Debbie found strength in the Lord.

Debbie held many jobs over the years, sometimes three at a time, but was most proud of the time she spent at Bath Iron Works where she assisted the efforts to build the ships for our Navy.

While proud of her work at BIW, above all the other jobs, she loved being a mother and grandmother the most. She did all that she could and found it deep within her to give even more so that her children would have a happy home, food in their bellies, and laughter in the air. When she became a grandmother, her heart and joy grew even further, where some of her best times were spent with those boys she loved so much.

Her sense of compassion and love for others went far out into the world where so many people look back on her child-like joy with admiration. Everyone will remember her laugh, and just as keenly recall her affection for frogs, music, and chocolate!

GEORGETOWN - We sadly lost a valuable member of the community on the evening of August 24, 2020 when Stephen C. Dexter, 70, favorably known as Critter, passed away after a courageous 4 year battle with cancer.
Critter grew up in North Yarmouth, graduating from Greely High School in 1968. He was an easy-going and caring soul. His even-keeled nature had a way of drawing people to him. He was thought of as a beloved friend and father to many. He took great pride in his manicured lawn and vegetable garden which he enjoyed sharing with others. He always appreciated having gatherings with family and friends, welcoming whoever came. Critter looked forward to his trips to Round Mountain Pond. Whether it was bird hunting, deer camp, snowmobiling, or just a trip to camp, the memories made there were one of a kind. He loved the magic of Christmas, perfectly decorating his massive tree with family heirloom ornaments and lighting his yard with bright lights well beyond the Christmas season. Being a self-employed fisherman was the finest kind to him. Always up well before the sun, hard work was a part of his daily life. He started lobstering in the 1970’s out of the Stripper 1. From there he went tuna fishing, dragging for scallops and shrimp, and then spent the majority of his fishing career lobstering off of Sequin Island out of the Kristin Leigh. He was instrumental in establishing the Georgetown Fishermen’s Co-op as the president for a good number of years and remaining involved a couple weeks prior to his passing.
His talents were many from being an accomplished cook, knowledgeable outdoorsman, and a skilled tradesman including plumbing, painting, and mechanical work. He had a passion for history and the wisdom to have conversations about many aspects of life. His greatest legacy is that of a beloved partner, father, grandfather and friend who loved to sit around the kitchen table with those who stopped by.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Edna Dexter and his beloved cat of 19 years, PT. He is survived by his significant other Ruth York along with his brothers Frederick (Billie) Stenzel, William (Linda) Dexter, Thomas (Rose) Dexter and sister, Judith (James) Colburn, daughter Kristin Dennen (Christopher), granddaughter Ella, grandson Maxwell, daughter Lauren Bosso (Vincent Andrew), grandson Vincent James, numerous nieces, nephews, and Ruth’s sons Gregory (Natalie, daughter, Georgia and son, Kai) and Christopher (Vanessa) Nadeau along with his many friends and his newly adopted cat, Beans. He is also survived by his former wife Flip Dexter and her significant other Rich Close.
A private family gathering will take place with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.

The family would like to express their thanks for the wonderful help and care given by Dr. Lisa Rutstein, Androscoggin Hospice House, and his many Georgetown friends for all their help and support. A special thanks to Dolly Wilbur, his CHANS nurse and longtime friend, who was truly an angel throughout this journey.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to the Maine Fishermen’s Forum Scholarship Fund, PO Box 288 Bath, ME 04530 and continue his legacy by being kind to someone.
