Pickleball isn’t the problem.�Pilates isn’t the problem.�Peloton isn’t the problem.

The problem is calling them a strategy.

Midlife muscle does not respond to sweat.�It responds to stimulus.

That burn you feel?�Lactic acid.

That puddle on the floor?�Thermoregulation.

Neither guarantees muscle adaptation.
And muscle is not optional after 40.

It is metabolic protection.�It is hormonal buffering.�It is bone density insurance.�It is visual “tone.” Looking like you workout.�It is your long game.

Restriction won’t build it.�More cardio won’t build it.�Random classes won’t build it.
Progressive overload builds it.

There was a year I felt like an empty shell.
Functioning. Barely. �Teaching.�Coaching.��Going through the motions.
But waking up every morning with pressure on my chest.
Before my eyes opened, the thoughts began. The anxiety. The monkey mind.
My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
And I lived in fight or flight. I couldn’t focus. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t turn it off. ��Obviously an extreme example, but…

This isn’t a “cute” move.  An Instagram-worthy exercise.

This is architecture.

Single-leg barbell shoulder press:
Glutes engaged.
Core firing.
Foot gripping.
Load stabilized.

Why?
Because after 40:
Bone density declines without stimulus.
Balance fades quietly.
Falls become more common.
Muscle disappears if not trained intentionally.

You don’t maintain what you don’t train.

Read that again. 

This should hit home.  I guarantee you know someone who has fallen as they age.  How did that work out?

I don’t train (only) for beach season (although you do know your girl LOVES the beach).

I train for:
Confidence at 80.
Independence at 85.
Strength at 90.

And my 90-year-old self - you better f-ing believe she will be walking on the beach in her bathing suit!

Train the future version of you.

Longevity isn’t a supplement.
It’s a stimulus.

Not going to lie. This one hit me hard. Began to spiral a bit.
What’s next? Dentures. Depends. Decline.

I told you.

I was ruminating.  I have never before had to wear contacts or glasses.
This felt like a betrayal.

I couldn’t read my book at night, magazines were a joke and menus were getting increasingly difficult.  I used to tease my husband for his “old man” glasses.  Karma is a B.

I began to reframe, just as I do with my clients.

Aging isn’t the enemy.  (It is a gift.)

But….Avoidance is.
Midlife isn’t your body betraying you.

It’s your body communicating.

Joints ache.
Skin itches.
Mood fluctuates (like a lot.)
Muscle mass declines.
Cycles shift.
Libido diminishes.
Energy decreases.

This isn’t loss.  And it isn’t inevitable or permanent.

It’s data.

And high-performing women?
We don’t ignore data.

Powdered raspberry Jell-O mixed into lumpy-a*s cottage cheese.

I hated every bite. But it was on “The Plan.”
So I ate it. Like clockwork. For weeks.
