EVALUATION OF THE CORNEA
The cornea functions to focus light (along with the lens of the eye) and must remain clear. It also serves a protective funtcion since it serves as part of the outer wall of the eye.
What kinds of things do we do in the office to evaluate the cornea?
1 We can evaluate the focusing ability of the cornea through something called the wavefront analysis
2. We can evaluate the curvature of the cornea with a machine called a corneal topography unit (see a blog elsewhere)
3. We can image the 5 layers of the cornea with an OCT (the same machine as mentioned in a blog on retina evaluation). This is done to evaluate the depth of scars or other abnormalities in anticipation of corneal grafting procedures.
4. We can visualize the very important inner cell lining of the cornea - the endothelium, the most metabolically active part of the cornea most involved in maintaining clairity and check for a not uncommon condition called Fuch's corneal dystrophy
5. We can measure the corneal thickness down to the micron level (there are 1000 microns in 1 millimeter and 25 millimeters per inch)
6. We can of course send cultures in the case of infection or scrapings or biopsy in the case of tumors.
