It may feel like the right but these three things are actually preventing your child from developing conversational speech.
Asking your child “wh” questions - kids that develop language by repeating phrases and songs they hear do not develop the ability to answer questions until later in their language development. If you ask them questions before their brain is ready, more than likely they’ll just repeat the question back to you and both of you will be frustrated.
Using only 1-2 word phrases - some people may tell you that your child only has the ability to understand single words at a time. That likely isn’t true. Most children that communicate using echolalia/ scripting have the capabilities to memorize entire shows, songs, or books!! 🤯
Prompting your child to talk - pressure to communicate can shut down their brain. Children that use echolalia pick up language and phrases naturally that make sense and light up their brain. When we prompt and force them to use language we think it’s important, it can slow their natural language development process and train their brain to not feel like their way of communication is valid.
Now that you know what to STOP doing, here’s what you should know.
1. Children that develop language and communication in this way are gestalt language processors. They develop language differently than children that develop a vocabulary of primarily single words.
2. Gestalt language processing is not a disorder. It’s a natural way to develop language and we needs to honor and affirm how they communicate.
3. They won’t script and use echolalia forever
If this sounds like a child you know, share this reel so children get the RIGHT support they need.
* Most speech therapists are NOT trained to work with gestalt language processors. You can find a list of trained speech therapists on registry. They also have a free webinar to help parents better understand gestalt language processing
