Today we celebrate our feature, Dr. Vanessa Jensen, General Surgeon and Chief of Surgical Services at Tse’hootsooi Medical Center in Fort Defiance, Arizona.
Vanessa Jensen, MD, earned her B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona. She obtained her medical degree and completed her general surgery residency in Tucson at the U of A College of Medicine and the University Medical Center.
Dr. Jensen is a general surgeon and the Chief of Surgical Services at the Tse’hootsooi Medical Center, Fort Defiance Indian Hospital in Fort Defiance, Arizona. She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery with the U of A College of Medicine, Tucson and Phoenix campuses. She serves on the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) Board as Secretary as well as is a Board Officer with the Arizona Trauma Association. She feels honored to mentor and guide students, as she attributes her journey to her mentors.
Vanessa Jensen, MD, is Dine’ (Navajo) born and raised in Tuba City, Arizona. Her clans are Deer-Spring, born for the Edge Water Clan; her maternal grandfather’s clan is the Red-Running-Into-Water Clan, and her paternal grandfather’s clan is the Mexican Clan. Dr. Jensen has had the rewarding experience of working among her Navajo communities. She has dedicated over a decade to serving her hometown of Tuba City in the western Navajo Nation and continues her service in the eastern Navajo Nation in Fort Defiance, Arizona. Her work is a testament to the harmony she has found between Western medicine and traditional Navajo beliefs. This balance is not just a professional achievement, but a personal one, as she credits her supportive family for helping her navigate and integrate these two important aspects of her life.
Dr. Jensen, beyond her professional roles, is a person of many interests. She enjoys hiking, watching movies, and participating in her tribal marching band, the Navajo Nation Band, as a flute player.
