When the days get shorter, Mom or Dad might start to feel more confused or anxious in the evenings — it’s called sundowning, and it’s common with dementia.

Keep things calm: turn on lights as the sun sets, stick to a familiar routine, and use soothing activities like music or folding laundry to help them relax.

The goal? Less stress, more peace. Shorter days don’t have to mean harder nights. 🌙💜

Mom or Dad might not see Halloween the way we do.
The masks, loud noises, and spooky decor can feel terrifying to someone living with dementia.

Keep things simple: skip the decorations, keep the night calm, and let neighbors know not to knock.
If they do get scared, stay calm, reassure, and gently redirect.

For families living with dementia, peace and comfort are the real treats this Halloween. 🎃💜

The question we get asked more often than anything at Minute Women.

- Where does your name come from?
- Do you only hire women?
- Do you only care for women?
- Who came up with the name?

All those question answered in this video.

Ryan shares a time when our client at Minute Women didn't speak English well, and our staff and caregivers had to come up with creative ideas to engage with her. This can happen more often than you expect, as the world has become much smaller and people from all over the world come to live in the United States.

Ryan discusses what happens if a family dosen't connect with or like their caregiver for whatever reason?

Well, letting us know quickly is important. Then we discuss if it is something we can train the caregiver on? Is it something that will fix itself over time (knowing where things are in the house, knowing the best routine for someon) or is it a situation where the caregiver needs to be replaced.

A big red flag 🚨is when you request a caregiver to be replaced and they keep coming back, especially over long periods of time. This means the agency does not have anyone else to provide you and their "bench" is limited. This can happen to every agency, but its a concern when it goes from a week or so to months.

The reason being is maybe there is a great caregiver that will be availible soon and the caregiver being replaced is good enough for the time being, that's understandable to keep them on the case until a replacement is ready. But if the caregiver isn't replaced in due time, then its a problem.

Ryan shares a situation that we commonly experience where one family member is the primary caregiver for their parent and while totally overwhelmed, they apprehensive about bringing in care services because they have always been "the caregiver" and feel guilty about needing assistance.

One of the great dangers with diabetes is the substantial increase in risk of other chronic diseases, such as dementia. Individuals with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes face significantly higher risks of cognitive impairment compared to the general population, and this suggests there may be shared biological mechanisms at work. (Alzheimer’s disease has even gained the nickname “type 3 diabetes.”)
