James A. Desmond, Jr., 96, of Lexington, S.C. passed away on December 23, 2025. Born on October 30, 1929 in Long Branch, New Jersey; he was the son of the late James A. Desmond, Sr. and his wife. James joined the Navy after high school and spent 20 years as a Chief Hospital Corpsman serving aboard several ships and at Naval Reserve Training Centers in Springfield, Massachusetts; Honolulu, Hawaii; Lynchburg, Virginia; and Columbia, South Carolina. After retirement from the Navy, he worked as the Court Clerk and Court Administrator for the City of Columbia, SC.

James was an avid fisherman, loved following the New York Yankees, and looked forward to family vacations at the beach each year. As a former Navy man, he loved the ocean and the shore. James was a life-long Catholic and a generous and loving man who was always willing to help others when they were in need. James loved his family and was known to spoil his grandkids and delight in spending time together with them.

James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Margie Desmond; his dear son Marvin Desmond; and dear sisters, Irene Woolley and Delores Jackson, of Long Branch, New Jersey. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Sobotowicz and son-in-law William Sobotowicz of Lexington, SC; granddaughter Penny Sobotowicz of Columbia, SC; daughter-in-law Barbara Desmond and grandson Chris Desmond of Columbia, SC.

A memorial service will be held for James on January 5, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, 503 N. Lake Drive, Lexington, SC.

October 10, 1940 – December 22, 2025

Sue Ellen Monsees Maghan, age 85, of Lexington, passed away December 22, 2025, in Greenwood following a long battle with ALS.
Born October 10, 1940, in Alexandria, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Dillard Ringen Monsees and Frances Lorraine (Biedler) and the wife of the late Robert John Maghan, III.

Sue grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from Washington-Lee High School and Washington Hospital Center School of Nursing. She and her husband Bob were married on June 14, 1962, and they celebrated 57 years together. They were loved by many as the owners and operators of Hite’s Restaurant in Lexington from 1980 to 1997. Sue also enjoyed a 62-year career in nursing, only retiring because of her illness in November, 2024.

Sue worshipped at Mt. Horeb Church for more than 40 years where she enjoyed bible study, served in the Concessions of Hope ministry for families experiencing homelessness, and volunteered for VBS. She also delighted in serving others as a volunteer at Lexington Medical Center for 40 years and as a family mentor for the Courage Center substance recovery program.

Sue is survived by her son, Sean Michael Maghan (Jill Renee Hook) of Chapin; daughter, Kelley Lorraine Maghan Clarke (Samuel Lindsey Clarke) of Greenwood; and grandchildren, Brynne Elise Maghan, Samuel Robert Clarke (Hannah), Elijah John Clarke, Micah Ann Clarke, David Lindsey Clarke, and Joseph Biedler Clarke, to all of whom she was affectionately known as “Mom Sue.” She also leaves siblings, James Morgan Monsees (Harriet), Ann Biedler Monsees Bressan, and Judith Ringen Monsees Shaughnessy (Gerald), many beloved nieces and nephews, and her cat, Cleo.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Mt. Horeb Church in Lexington, SC. The family will receive visitors at Mt. Horeb from 10-11am. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Claudette West Miller, a beloved, faithful, generous, patient, and selfless woman, passed away on December 19, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on February 7, 1937, Claudette was a resident of West Columbia, South Carolina.

She grew up in Milledgeville, Georgia, and graduated from Midway High School in 1953. Claudette then attended George Business School, where she furthered her education.

Claudette was a devoted homemaker, wife, and cherished family member, known affectionately as Mama to her children and Gan to her grandchildren. She loved her family deeply and never retired from her role as a caregiver and supporter. She married John Loy Miller on December 1, 1962, and together they had two children, John (Jennifer) and Terrell. She was also a proud grandmother to John Loy III and Lauren.

Her personal interests included cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an active member of the choir at Cayce United Methodist Church. Claudette had a deep love for her more recent church, Mount Horeb Global Methodist Church in Lexington, South Carolina. Her favorite pastime was enjoying relaxing weekends at Lake Wateree.

Expressions of gratitude are extended to South Carolina Hospice, and her dedicated caregivers, Frances and Loretta, who provided comfort and support.

A visitation will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Lexington, located at 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072, on December 31, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm at the same location. A graveside service will take place at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, South Carolina, at 2:00 pm.

Claudette left a wonderful legacy behind and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Frances Elizabeth Roof Roberts, 79, died on December 23, 2025 of pulmonary failure following a stroke. She was the wife of Dr. Al Roberts, and the mother of Dr. David Roberts (Kim) and Dr. John Roberts (Carrie). Her parents were David Evans Roof and Ethel Mae Cromer Roof. She and Al had been married 56 years, after 6 years of dating and engagement, and after sitting in alphabetical order for 4 years at Lexington High School.

She attended Columbia College as an organ major but switched to the University of South Carolina to major in nursing. She worked in the Cardiac unit of Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston while Al was in Dental College there. Back in Lexington, she loved her sons David and John. She loved the Lexington High School band boosters club and fearlessly chaperoned the percussion bus on band trips. She loved Italian shoes and was known as the Imelda Marcos of Oak Grove. She loved her dog, Freckles, and trips to Paris.

She attended St. David Lutheran Church, where she played the organ, taught Sunday School, and corraled Cain and Able in the pews while her husband played the organ in the balcony. The pain of fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndrome took much joy from her life and prevented her from doing many of the things she loved.

Memorials may be made to St. David Lutheran Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The family deeply appreciates the professional staff of Lexington Medical Center, and especially the caring hands of staff from the 4th floor South and 10th floor North Tower. We also appreciate the prayers and concern of St. David Lutheran Church and Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey.

A visitation will be held on December 30, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. David Lutheran Church, located at 132 St. Davids Church Road, West Columbia, SC, 29170, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at St. David Lutheran Church Cemetery following the service.

Patsy Hentz Shull, 87, passed away Tuesday December 23, 2025. Born June 16, 1938 in Lexington County, she was the daughter of Thomas Henry Hentz and Fae Hite Hentz. She graduated from Lexington High School. Patsy worked many years for Dooley Law Firm in Lexington.

Patsy was a lifelong member of St. David Lutheran Church, West Columbia. She served on the Altar Guild for many years, active in the David Sunday School Class, the Tone Chimes and the Young at Heart group. She helped with the Dooley-Hite Reunion, Shull Reunion and Hentz Reunion. Patsy worked with LICS for many years. She was loved by her church family and community friends. She and Junior ate lunch at Wendy's in Lexington often and made new friends with staff and regulars. Patsy was well loved by all who knew her!

Patsy is survived by her husband of 68 years, Ernest D. Shull, Jr. (Lexington); her son and daughter-in-law, David W. Shull and Charlotte Knight Shull (Elloree) and her son, Calvin H. Shull (Lexington); her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carroll and Vivian Shull and her sister-in-law, Jackie Shull and their families. She will be missed by her extended Knight-Tucker-Hoffman-Dorn family whom she spent many family gatherings with at Stumphole and in Sandy Run.

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents; her son and daughter-in-law, Ernest Bryan Shull and Donna Burbank Shull; and her brother-in-law, George F. Shull, Sr.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at St. David Lutheran Church prior to Graveside Service at 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the excellent care she received at National Health Care Lexington over the last year and Lexington Health for the excellent care the past few days of her precious life.

Payton Nathaniel “Makana” Hough, born on March 18, 1991, passed away on November 25, 2025, at the age of 34. Born and raised on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii, he resided in Columbia, South Carolina and was a cherished and compassionate individual known for his gentle, goofy, and intuitive nature. He was loving, patient, and thoughtful, always generous, kindhearted, and selfless, and he was fiercely protective of his family and friends.

Payton's early education included Hanalei Elementary School, where he demonstrated his aptitude for technology by troubleshooting the school's computer system at just 11 years old. He continued his education at Kapaa Middle School, Kapaa High School, and the Elite Element Academy.

In his professional life, Payton was the owner and operator of i.e.Tech Solutions, where he built computers and specialized in computer and iPhone repair, troubleshooting, tune-ups, computer tutoring, and consulting.

Payton is survived by his parents, W. Payton and Zina Hough; his sisters, Tanisha Baker (Andrew) and Keani Hough; and his grandmother, Anita Hough. He is also remembered by his uncles, James Hough and Ben Roxton Hough; aunts, Roni (Andy) Shea and Josie (Steve) Pelayo, Faith (Michael) Derasin; uncles, Harvey (Debbie) Galapir, Wesley (Ella) Galapir, and Patrick (Charlene) Galapir; as well as numerous cousins and extended family. His Hanai uncle and aunt, Alfred and Gwen Rogers, also held a special place in his life. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Lordes Galapir, Ildefonso Galapir and Jim Hough.

Payton had a passion for skateboarding with his dad, computers, technology, music, poetry, and writing. He was a lover of the ocean and the outdoors, enjoying fishing, diving, and spearfishing with his dad, as well as boogie boarding. Payton's faith was an integral part of his life; he loved bible study, sharing about the love of God, praying with others, encouraging them, and telling people about Jesus.

In the community, Payton was known for his love of teaching others about computers and technology. He had a deep affection for people, especially the homeless, the less fortunate, the elderly, and children whom he mentored.

Payton's legacy is one of love and generosity. He was always eager to learn about the world and how it worked. Known for his hugs, laughter, and smiles, he was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need. He often left food or fruits in parks for homeless children and gave away his possessions to friends who were less fortunate.

Expressions of gratitude are extended to Kelly Rael, Dr. Keith Claypool, Sarah Hill, Pastor Steve and Ana Rex of Calvary Chapel North Shore, Pastor Roy and Dely Sasaki, Pastor Vil and Grace Galiza, Pastor Mike and Anne Pierce, and Pastor Alfred and Gwen Rogers, who were Payton’s personal prayer partners and mentors. The family also wishes to thank Ohana Christian Fellowship and everyone who has ever prayed for Payton or the family.

Payton held several Bible verses dear, including Proverbs 3:4-5, John 3:16, John 4:10, Jeremiah 29:11, and Isaiah 40:31. These verses provided him comfort during difficult times.

Payton loved to give "energy hugs" to those who were tired or distraught. He loved Jesus, and his family finds solace in knowing that he is now in the hands of a loving God, where there is no more pain and suffering.

Stephen Rhett Sharpe, 74, a lifelong resident of Lexington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 13, 2025, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.
Born on April 1, 1951, Rhett was the son of the late Rudolph “Cooter” and Marjorie Harmon Sharpe. A graduate of Lexington High School, Rhett dedicated 31 years of faithful service to the State of South Carolina, retiring from the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Rhett was an avid outdoorsman whose greatest joy was found in nature. He was a member of The Willingham Hunting Club, where he spent many great times with his friends. Whether he was hunting deer, fishing on Lake Murray, or turkey hunting with his best companion, his beloved dog Willie, he felt most at home in the outdoors.

Rhett will be deeply missed and remembered by his family and a host of friends for his warm smile, his humble spirit, and his ever-present willingness to help others.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to Rhett's lifelong friends who provided unwavering love and support throughout his life and especially during his illness.

He was predeceased by his loving parents; his brother, Julian; and his only son, Stephen.

Rhett is survived by his two sisters, Robin Sharpe Leverton of Beaufort, SC, and Rynn Sharpe Herndon of Columbia, SC; his nephew, Robbie O. Chandler; and his nieces, Healy F. Akridge and Nora H. Sharpe.

A graveside service will be held Friday, December 19, 2025, at 10:30 am at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Lexington, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church.

Robert Marion Schultz, lovingly known as Ppa and Schultzie, passed away on December 9, 2025, in Lexington, South Carolina, at the age of 90.
Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, Marion lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and love for his family. He was a paratrooper in the United States Army, and continued skydiving for many years, before building a long and hardworking career as a long-haul truck driver, taking his children on numerous fun filled trips alongside him in the “big truck” then including his grandchildren in motorhome trips when they came along.

Robert had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed traveling, music, and building just about anything with his hands. Known affectionately as “Pop’s Do All,” there truly wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. If something was broken, everyone knew exactly who to call. He also had a generous heart and quietly collected can tabs for donation to the Ronald McDonald House, always wanting to help children in need.

He was funny, playful, and always the center of attention wherever he went. Marion would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. His joy for life was contagious, and his sayings — “Toodle de do!” and “Finer than a hair on a frog” when asked how he was — will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.

His legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on through the many lives he touched.

Marion is survived by his daughters, Tammy Cooper and Cindy Keisler (Anthony); grandchildren, Kari Robinson (Andrew), Lauren Foust (David), and Ben Keisler (Sammy); and four great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy.

He was preceded in death by his son, Sammy Schultz; daughter, Sharon Lucas; granddaughter, Megan Keisler; and sisters, Elizabeth Colson, Evelyn Grubb, Emolee Marsee, Phyllis Marsee and brother Dan Schultz.

A celebration of Marion’s life will be held Sunday, December 14, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home in Lexington SC.

Earl Dee Eads, 86, of Leesville passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 8th, 2025. Mr. Eads was born on March 15, 1939, in Russell Springs, Kentucky. He was the son of the late Delmer and Eva Eads.

Mr. Eads was an avid farmer for many years and he also owned his own lawn maintenance business for over 40 years. He was a loving Father, Grandpa and Poppy. He truly loved being outside and he enjoyed spending time with his donkeys, feeding the birds & cutting the grass.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff (Cindi) Eads of Vancleave, Mississippi, David Eads of Jackson, Mississippi, and Matt (Angel) Eads of Leesville, SC; step-daughter, Roxie (Blake) Kyzer of Lyman, South Carolina; son-in-law, Bob Camp; sister, Geneice Hansens of Illinois; grandchildren, Travis Griest (Crystal), Clint Griest (Johanna), Kenna Trenkamp (Matt), Kyle Kyzer (Elizabeth), Allison Griffen (Dale), Dylan Eads, Mindy Taylor (Nathan), Carly (John Allen) O’Conner, Serenity “Serey” Eads, Eva Rose Eads, Ariel Eads, Cory and Blake Clamp; great-grandchildren, Vance and Reed Griest, Alden Griest, Connor and Cayson Trenkamp, Anna Kate Kyzer, Porter Dungan, Mason and Emma Griffin, Addison & Anderson Taylor, Walter and Declan O’Conner.

Mr. Eads was preceded in death by the love of his life Sharon “Pixie” Eads; his beautiful daughter, Robyn Renee Camp; parents, Delmer Lee and Eva Ann Eads; brothers, Roger D. Eads, Delmer Eads Jr., James V. Eads, and twin brother, Gerral L. Eads.
