Occipital Neuralgia

Occipital Neuralgia is a neurological pain condition that originates from irritation, inflammation, or compression of the occipital nerves located in the upper cervical region of the neck. These nerves primarily the greater occipital nerve (C2), lesser occipital nerve, and third occipital nerve (C3) emerge from the upper spinal roots and travel upward through the neck muscles to supply sensation to the scalp, especially the back of the head (occipital region).

When these nerves become irritated due to muscle tightness, cervical spine disorders, trauma, poor posture, or nerve entrapment, they can produce sudden, sharp, electric-shock–like pain that radiates from the base of the skull toward the scalp and sometimes behind the eyes. Patients may also experience scalp tenderness, burning sensation, or sensitivity to touch, making routine activities like combing hair or resting the head uncomfortable.

From an anatomical perspective, the upper cervical spinal nerves (C1–C3) play a crucial role in transmitting sensory signals from the posterior scalp. The greater occipital nerve, which is the most commonly involved in occipital neuralgia, travels between neck muscles and can be compressed along its pathway. Understanding this nerve pathway is important for diagnosis, nerve block procedures, and targeted treatment strategies such as physiotherapy, posture correction, medications, or occipital nerve blocks.
