Happy National Nutrition Month!
This month, we’re celebrating something deeper than nutrients on a plate.
We’re celebrating a nourishing relationship with food. And we hold the reality that for far too many people, that relationship is constrained by finances, displacement, structural inequities, and political instability.
Food is color and culture.
It’s laughter around the table.
It’s variety that keeps things interesting.
It’s satisfaction that lingers long after the last bite.
And access to that experience is not equal.
Globally and here at home, food insecurity disrupts not only physical health but also our relationship with eating. Research consistently shows that individuals who experience food insecurity are at significantly higher risk for disordered eating behaviors and eating disorders: as scarcity, unpredictability, and chronic stress shape patterns of restriction, bingeing, and preoccupation with food. When access to nourishment is unstable, the body and mind adapt in ways that can have lasting consequences.
A nourishing relationship with food makes room for fun and flexibility. It honors hunger and fullness, pleasure and connection. It allows space for everyday meals and special traditions. But that kind of relationship depends on safety and reliable access.
If you are able, consider making a donation this month to your local food pantry or to organizations providing meals in crisis zones, such as World Central Kitchen. Small acts of collective care matter.
Nutrition isn’t just about what we eat, it’s about how we experience eating.
May this month be both a celebration of nourishment and a call to widen access so that more people can experience food as joyful, meaningful, and deeply satisfying.
Here’s to shared meals, expanded tables, and nourishment that supports every body. 💛
