November is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month! Men are often encouraged by their families ans culture to not express emotions that aren’t “strong” or “happy.”

Before we are male or female, we are human and ALL humans have the same emotions. We meet with men daily that had family & cultural influences which encouraged them to stop expressing some emotions like sadness, rejection, fear and worthlessness.

Since we know emotions don’t just go away, we see a lot of men who have withdrawn and shut down completely or express it with anger which is a “strong manly” emotion.

If you’re a man who is struggling with feeling connected with yourself or others in your life, you aren’t alone! Asking for help isn’t weakness!

Let’s also add “Freeze or Fawn” or shut down response…

When you’re a child your environment helps shape your reactions. To stay “attached” to our caregivers, we change who we are to fit the situation. Kids are always “reading the room” so to speak!

When you grow up, most of us keep doing the same reactions even though we are adults and may have our own families.

Healing means…
*Recognizing the patterns
*Reparenting yourself with compassion and understanding
*Creating a new life that is safe & supportive!

Let’s talk about “Mental Health First Aid” - Imagine for a moment that a friend of yours fell and broke their arm. Now imagine ignoring that person’s injury. Imagine shaming them for having a broken bone or even getting mad at them for needing help. Hard to imagine right?! Most of us would get them help, stay with them until they were in the care of a professional and then we would check on them after!

Mental Health first aid is no different. We see someone that has an mental health injury (the brain is an organ after all) and we need to give care, concern and get them help, check on them and avoid shaming, blaming or ignoring them. If someone you love (a child, a partner or friend) or yourself has a mental health injury, try looking at it as a physical need and stay with it until they are where they need to be. Sometimes one friend makes all the difference 🫶🏼

What a powerful graphic! The Power & Control wheel was developed to educate victims on the myth that domestic violence is “just physical” abuse. It’s complex and often misunderstood! Knowledge is power! If you are suffering in silence, there is hope! Our local shelter, Greenhouse 17 has a 24 hour hotline. They can help you understand and safely exit your abusive situation! 800.544.2022
