Davidson Funeral Home

Davidson Funeral Home Generations of trusted care. Compassionately serving families since 1865. In 1908 a young R. O. Kirkman, Sr. began working for Mr. McCrary and in 1910 Mr. R. A.

Davidson Funeral Home has a long and colorful history of providing funeral service in Lexington and Davidson County. We trace our roots to John McCrary who came to Lexington in 1865 as a cabinet maker and sold coffins in his furniture store. Kirkman graduated from Cincinnati College of Embalming and returned to Lexington as the first licensed embalmer in town. Over the next several decades Mr. Kirkman operated as McCrary Furniture & Embalmers, Kirkman & Penniger, Lexington Funeral Directors, Kirkman & Son, and in 1940 incorporated as Davidson Funeral Home, Inc. had two sons who followed him in the funeral business. Victor Kirkman and R. Kirkman, Jr. The assumed control of Davidson in 1948 and owned and operated the business until 1989 when they sold the business to Jack & Joan Briggs who have owned and operated Briggs Funeral Home in a neighboring town since 1970, and to Larry Morrison who had been employed with Davidson since 1983. Victor Kirkman died at the age of 88 in 2001 and R. died at the age of 87 in 2005. They both remained licensed by the state board of funeral service until their death and as long as health permitted they continued to work visitations and funerals spanning a period of almost 100 years of the Kirkman Family’s involvement in funeral service in Davidson County. Today, Dan Briggs serves as President of the company, Joan Briggs is Vice President, Jack Briggs is Secretary and Matthew Jernigan is Treasurer. We love and miss former owner Larry Morrison who passed away in 2020.

There are people behind the scenes who carry more than most will ever realize, and our operations manager, Charles Tilley is one of those people.

He carries the weight of making sure everything runs smoothly… but more than that, he carries a deep care for the families we serve and for every member of our staff. He notices the details, steps in when needed, and leads in a quiet, steady way that keeps everything moving forward.

What makes it even more meaningful is the way he stewards what was poured into him. The legacy taught by men like R.O. and Victor Kirkman, Jack Briggs, Larry Morrison, Wayne Hilliard, Vernon Lloyd, and many others isn’t just remembered, it’s lived out daily through his work, his character, and his commitment.

Because of him, things don’t just “get done”, they get done the "Davidson Way".

Grateful for his leadership, his heart, and the example he sets for all of us.

As the first signs of spring begin to bloom, we’re reminded that the beauty we enjoy today was thoughtfully prepared long before the season arrived. 🌼🌿 Each flower reflects intention, care, and time.

In much the same way, preplanning your funeral is a meaningful way to care for those you love. By making decisions in advance, you provide clarity and peace—easing the burden on your family and allowing them to focus on what truly matters: honoring your life and supporting one another.

This spring, consider the comfort that comes from planning ahead. With thoughtful preparation, your legacy can be a gift of peace and reassurance.

At Davidson, we’re honored to walk alongside you every step of the way. 🤍

Some days at Davidson Funeral Home are heavy.

Our team steps into hospital rooms, living rooms, and quiet offices where grief is fresh and words are hard to find. They listen to stories, carry emotions, steady trembling hands, and serve families with compassion and care, often putting others before themselves.

We are united in one goal: Hometown Care. Compassionate Service.

To our staff, thank you. Your gentleness, integrity, and heart for people make a difference every single day.

And to our community, thank you for trusting us in your time of need. It is an honor we never take lightly.
