Meet Luciana, the 10-year-old who has discovered her
confidence and joy on horseback at CKRH.
Luciana has faced challenges every day of her life. Diagnosed
with cerebral palsy, autism, ADHD, and an exceptionally rare
genetic disorder—9q34 duplication, shared by only 22 people in
the world—she is the only child in her school with mobility needs
and the only wheelchair user. For years, her days were filled with therapies:
physical, occupational, feeding, and speech. Doctors once questioned if she
would ever walk, talk, eat solid food, or attend school alongside her peers.
Time and again, Luciana proved them wrong.
Today, she is an accomplished Special Olympian, an active Girl Scout, and—
thanks to your support—a horseback rider.
When Luciana began lessons at CKRH earlier this year, she was immediately
“horse crazy.” The moment she sits in the saddle, everything changes. As
her mom says, “Every horse person who sees her up there says instantly,
‘She was born to be on a horse.’ And I wholeheartedly agree.”
Riding has given Luciana a confidence she has never felt before. For
someone who often feels like the “odd girl out,” horseback riding gives her
a place where she belongs. She tells her family about the connection she
feels with her horse right after lessons—something she never could do
before. Her strength, coordination, and ability to express her emotions are
blossoming in ways that bring her parents to tears.
Recently, when asked what makes riding so special, Luciana said: “When I
get on a horse, everything goes away—I don’t feel disabled.”
With your support, riders like Luciana—and many others living with
disabilities—find a place where challenges are left at the barn door and
confidence takes the reins. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to
CKRH’s 2025 Annual Fund at https://ckrh.org/donate to help create more
experiences like this for others.
