Suffering from vertigo?
That spinning or dizzy feeling can sometimes come from the inner ear and the balance system. But something a lot of people don’t realize is neck tension can also play a role.
Muscles like the SCM (sternocleidomastoid) and the small suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull can get really tight. When that happens it can mess with the signals your body uses for head position and balance, which can sometimes make dizziness feel worse.
Certain massage techniques can help take pressure off those areas and improve movement in the neck, things like:
• Suboccipital release
• Gentle cervical decompression
• Working the SCM and upper neck muscles
By helping those muscles relax and freeing up the tissue around the neck, massage can sometimes help reduce some of the tension that contributes to dizziness symptoms.
Now if vertigo is caused by inner-ear crystal displacement (often called BPPV), there’s a repositioning technique called the Epley maneuver that’s often used. That’s usually performed by physical therapists or vestibular specialists who are trained to treat inner ear conditions.
So if you’re dealing with vertigo, the cause can sometimes be the inner ear… the neck… or a combination of both.
That’ why figuring out the root cause matters.
