Screening and Evaluation

Expressive and Receptive Language Disorders

What is an expressive language disorder ?If you have an expressive disorder, it means you have difficulty with expressing ideas. Expressive means of communication can take the form of speech, writing, gesturing, or even sign language for hearing impaired individuals.

What is a receptive language disorder ? If you have a receptive disorder, you have difficulty with understanding others’ expression – through listening, reading, etc. This may include language delays, and social pragmatic language disorders. A receptive delay is likely to show up before age 3 .

What are some characteristics of receptive language delay:

* Difficulty learning new words
* Not listening when you speak to them
* Not showing interest when you read to them
* Not being able to follow verbal instructions
* Not being able to understand long utterances
