--Residents, visitors encouraged to take online survey to assess transportation preferences--

LĪHU‘E – The Office of Economic Development is inviting residents and visitors to complete a survey to assess transportation preferences on Kaua‘i.

This survey is being deployed as part of the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP), for which the County of Kaua‘i is receiving technical assistance to study ways to improve the island’s transportation system through integrating emerging transportation technology.

“As Kaua‘i's population grows and tourism continues to increase, traffic congestion will get worse,” said Nalani Brun, OED Director. “Providing an affordable, sustainable, and convenient transportation system will make traveling around Kaua‘i less burdensome and boost local business revenues.”

Throughout this project, consultants from the National Renewable Energy Lab have been working with OED and local stakeholders exploring what and where various alternative transportation options may work well on island.

This survey is designed to better understand why people choose certain modes of transportation and what would make them change to something different if the option was made readily available. The survey results will provide important info for the ETIPP transportation studies.

“The intent of the survey and the project research is not to find ways to get rid of cars altogether, but to find avenues where cars can be replaced by more sustainable travel alternatives where it makes sense,” Brun added.

Responses to the surveys are voluntary and respondents can choose to be anonymous. The survey takes roughly 5 to 7 minutes to complete and will be available online until October 31, 2022. Those interested can also choose to enter into a drawing for the chance to win a gift box valued at $100 from the Alakoko Store on Kaua‘i.
