A word from the Alzheimer's Association.......
Dear Friends,
Our thoughts are with those evacuating or preparing for Hurricane Irma, especially families facing Alzheimer's or other dementias.
A dramatic weather event like this one creates additional stress and confusion for individuals living with Alzheimer's and poses a greater burden on their caregivers. The following tips may help before and during a hurricane:
•Prepare an emergency kit in a watertight container and store it in an easily accessible location. Include easy on/off clothes, extra identification and small comfort items. Use waterproof bags to protect medications and documents.
•Even in the early stage of Alzheimer's, changes in routine, traveling and new environments may increase the risk for wandering and agitation. Stay alert for unexpected reactions that may result from these changes.
•If possible, notify friends and family and share basic medical information, such as prescriptions and physician contact details. Provide updates on your location as you can.
•When appropriate, share the individual's dementia diagnosis with family members and others, such as hotel, airline or shelter staff, so they can better support you.
As always and especially during this difficult time, assistance is available all day, every day by calling our 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900. Consultants are standing by to offer personalized guidance, caregiving information and support. If you are able to access the internet, our website at alz.org offers practical tips and resources.
At the Alzheimer's Association, our hearts are with you and we are standing by to help in any way we can.
Sincerely,
Joanne Pike
