Depending on your location, today, November 19, or tomorrow, November 20, is the New Moon in Scorpio!
A new moon is the lunar phase when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, making it appear dark from Earth because the illuminated side is facing away from us. It marks the beginning of the lunar cycle and is also when the greatest difference between high and low tides, known as spring tides, occurs due to the combined gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon. A few hours before this new moon, the Moon will be at its farthest distance from Earth for the next 18 years.
Tonight, when the Moon peaks at 10:47 p.m., you won't see the Moon from the Northern Hemisphere, but she will still have a profound influence over us, today and over the next several days.
This new moon in Scorpio is an opportunity to undergo a "death and rebirth" process, shedding old habits, attachments, or beliefs that hinder your growth. It encourages you to face and understand the emotions you've been avoiding or repressing, leading to deeper self-awareness. As with any new moon, it's an ideal time for manifestation practices, especially those focused on healing, emotional liberation, and regenerative growth.
How to work with the New Moon energy:
This lunation can bring hidden truths to the surface, helping you discover your deepest desires and motivations.
Engage in quiet contemplation to understand your motives, fears, and needs. Practice letting go of what no longer serves you, whether through journaling, a symbolic act of burning, or any other practice that feels right. Instead of avoiding your feelings, try to be present with them, learning to manage their intensity with awareness. Understand that endings are necessary to create space for new beginnings and focus your intentions on what you want to grow in their place.
Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): There may be an urge to explore new horizons. These signs may also feel deeply in tune with their emotions.
Earth Signs (Ta**us, Virgo, Capricorn): A focus on long-term plans and material foundations may be beneficial, especially regarding health, wealth, and work.
Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Admitting feelings, improving communication, or focusing on career ambitions and community are encouraged.
Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): The focus may be on truths that can no longer be ignored, home and family life, or introspection
For a simple, but powerful, New Moon spell:
Prepare your space: Choose a quiet area, and consider cleansing it with smoke from incense or a smudge stick like mugwort or sage. You can set up an altar with items like candles, crystals, or reflective objects. Black, red, and white candles are good for this Moon. Include symbolic items that represent things you are manifesting, deities or spirits you are working with, or other items that feel right to you.
Use a bay leaf or piece of paper hand--torn from one of your journals or notebooks--a brown paper bag works just as well--for writing down your intentions.
Set your intentions: Meditate to clear your mind and focus on what you want to manifest for the new moon cycle. You can write down up to nine intentions (make it an odd number, it 3's), specific intentions, or affirmations on your paper or bay leaf. Feel free to draw sigils or other words of empowerment.
Cast the spell:
Light your candle and focus on your intention while it burns.
Fold the paper with your intentions in a specific way (e.g., folding toward you, then turning and folding again). You can just visualize your intentions or you can say your own words or prayers as you cast your spell and burn your paper or leaf.
For a simpler approach, you can simply say a charm or make a wish when you see the new moon.
Release the energy: Once the candle has finished burning or you are done with the ritual, you can symbolically release your spell. Some people take the remnants of the candle and ashes to a crossroads, while others bury them in a potted plant.
You can use the candle wax for divination if you wish, as well as the candle flame.
Always feel free to add your own herbs and oils during your spell. This is just a simple overview; make the magic your own!
