✨ Why Warm Drinks Support Your Body More Than Ice-Cold Ones ✨
If you’ve ever wondered why your body feels calmer, lighter, or more “open” when you sip something warm… there’s a reason. Actually, there are many & both physiology and Traditional Chinese Medicine agree on this one.
In TCM, warmth is life-giving. It protects your Spleen and Stomach Qi (your body’s “digestive fire”) + keeps your energy moving + prevents stagnation.
When we constantly shock the gut with cold drinks, we dampen that fire and slow the very process that fuels our bodies. Warm beverages, on the other hand, nurture your yang energy, support smoother fluid flow, and keep the digestive system operating at its strongest.
And the coolest part? Western physiology says almost the exact same thing.
Warm liquids gently dilate blood vessels, improve circulation, and activate your parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is where digestion, hormone balance, and healing occur. Enzymes in your stomach work best at body temperature, so warm beverages help them break down food more efficiently. Warm water also hydrates better, moves lymph more effectively, and doesn’t force your body to waste energy warming up ice-cold fluids.
Cold drinks constrict. Warm drinks relax.
Cold slows. Warm supports flow.
Cold dampens digestion. Warm strengthens it.
If you struggle with bloating, fatigue, hormonal symptoms, painful periods, cysts, sluggish digestion, or feel “cold” all the time….this is one of the simplest shifts you can make! Trade the ice water for warm lemon water, herbal tea, or even room temp water… and take note of any changes you might feel.
It took me forever to switch from ice cold water to room temp…but now I rarely order iced coffees…even in the summer!
