Concussion Tips 🤕

Researchers have found that when it comes to concussions, playing on artificial turf is no more dangerous than playing on grass fields...

Just in case, here are some concussion recommendations for the first 24 hours:
✔️When in doubt, seek immediate medical attention. Concussions can be deadly.
✔️If you do not need hospitalization and you are allowed to return home, you should have a responsible attendant stay with you for the first 24 hours.
✔️You should sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first 24 hours.
✔️You should drink only clear fluids for the first 8-12 hours.
✔️After 8-12 hours, you may begin with light meals and progress to a normal diet over the next day.
✔️You should avoid unnecessary physical and mental activity for the first 24 hours.
✔️Getting “your bell rung” frequently involves injuries to neck muscles and joints. Call your chiropractor for an assessment ASAP.

How do you get more mobility in the mid back (aka thoracic spine)? Give these half kneeling foam roller rotations a try!!

For anyone looking to go back to a sport that requires rotation (GOLFERS), learn to move better through your upper back and share the load with your hips and low back!

1️⃣ go into a half kneeling position with the outside leg up
2️⃣ pin the foam roller against the wall with your outside knee so that your knee, hip, and ankle are all in a straight line
3️⃣ make sure the other leg has the hip, knee, and ankle are in a straight line
4️⃣ rotate away from the wall opening up your shoulders
5️⃣ repeat opening towards the wall
6️⃣ repeat steps 1-5 but this time with the other leg on the outside!

Great study for anyone experiencing a disc injury! Surgery is not the first route!

97% OF LUMBAR DISC HERNIATIONS MANAGED SUCCESSFULLY WITHOUT SURGERY, SAYS STUDY. Results of a retrospective cohort study [1] including almost 280,000 subjects have concluded that pr*****ed lumbar intervertebral discs may be successfully managed without the need for surgery in 97% of cases.

The study examined the records of adults presenting 2007 to 2017 selected from a large insurance database. Only 3% failed non-operative therapy and underwent microdiscectomy.

Of the patients requiring surgery, the majority were male and an association was found with a history of lumbar spinal epidural injection or perioperative opioid use, leading the study to conclude that male gender and a history of prior opioid use were independent predictors of non-operative treatment failure.

The study provides yet more evidence supporting treatment and management interventions for lumbar disc herniation commonly provided by chiropractors, including manual therapy, education, exercise prescription and self-management strategies.

Exercise is medicine!! 💪

These researchers looked to assess just how early it’s possible for athletes to begin exercise testing. In this study they used a workload progression similar to that of the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill or Bike Test, incrementally increasing workload every 5 mins to elicit targeted heart rates of 110-170 bpm🚲

Neary et al found that mild-to-intense exercise can be performed safely AS EARLY AS DAY 2 following a concussion! This testing can also be repeated during the initial 7-9 days to assess for cerebral blood flow abnormalities leading to persistent symptoms 🧠

The practical application of this is that short duration exercise can be recommended safely following a concussion, although proper assessment of subthreshold symptom heart rate in a controlled setting is ideal and more effective 🧠
