AT Tip #13: An IEP Is Just the Start—Now Make Assistive Technology Work in Real Life!
IEP teams across Nebraska, this one’s for you! 💛💙
Selecting assistive technology in the IEP is important—but what happens after the meeting is what truly makes a difference for students.
Here are key steps to ensure AT is used consistently, meaningfully, and successfully:
✔ Assign Who Trains — Identify who will teach the student and staff how to use the device.
✔ Set the Schedule — Be clear about when and where the AT will be used (in class, at home, during certain subjects).
✔ Track Progress — Use data logs, student work, and observations to see whether the AT is helping.
✔ Support the Teachers — Staff need training, too! Make sure they feel confident with setup and troubleshooting.
✔ Include Backup Plans — Technology hiccups happen. Plan low-tech or alternate strategies in advance.
✔ Review & Adjust Regularly — AT should evolve with the student. Check in often and tweak as needed.
Strong follow-through after the IEP ensures students get the full benefit of the tools chosen to support their learning. Nebraska IEP teams—you make this happen! 🙌
