A three-judge panel ruled that California’s open-carry ban — covering counties where 95% of Californians live — violates the Second Amendment under Bruen.

The majority opinion was written by Judge Lawrence VanDyke — the same judge who dropped the now-famous video dissent in Duncan v. Bonta, calling out the Ninth Circuit for pretending magazines aren’t protected “arms” and for twisting history to justify gun control.

This time, he wasn’t dissenting.
He was writing for the court.

The panel made it clear:
• Open carry is deeply rooted in American history
• States can’t ban it just because they prefer concealed carry
• California failed its burden — again

Gun Owners of California was proud to support this case with an amicus brief, and today’s ruling highlights why that work matters. Strategic litigation support, real historical arguments, and relentless pressure in the courts move the needle.

This is exactly why GOC will not stop — not in the courts, not in the Capitol, and not until Californians’ rights are fully restored.

01/06/2026

Harmeet Dhillon’s Civil Rights Division has just filed an amicus brief opposing California’s ammunition background check scheme in Rhode v. Bonta, now before the Ninth Circuit en banc. That federal-level civil rights support is significant and reinforces the constitutional flaws in California’s law.

This case previously produced a favorable ruling from a three-judge Ninth Circuit panel, which held that California’s ammo background check regime fails the Supreme Court’s Bruen “text, history, and tradition” test. As expected, California’s DOJ immediately requested en banc review — and the Ninth Circuit granted it, a move that has become routine in Second Amendment cases.

While en banc review delays relief, it does not erase the panel’s ruling or its constitutional analysis. Amicus support like this strengthens the record, sharpens the arguments, and increases pressure on the court to apply Bruen honestly. This fight continues — and momentum is still moving in the right direction.

Bleeding doesn’t wait for EMS.

Uncontrolled bleeding is one of the fastest ways a person can die from trauma. Car crashes, range incidents, violence, workplace accidents – it all happens fast, and doing nothing is still a decision.

Here’s the reality:
🩸 A person can bleed to death in minutes, long before an ambulance arrives.

Basic steps anyone can learn:

1️⃣ Recognize serious bleeding

Blood pooling on the ground

Clothing soaking quickly

Blood spurting or flowing non-stop

2️⃣ Press or pack the wound

Use firm, direct pressure with cloth or gauze

For deep wounds, pack gauze into the wound and keep pressure on

3️⃣ Apply a tourniquet

For severe bleeding from arms or legs

Place it high and tight on the limb

Tighten until the bleeding stops, not just slows

These skills aren’t complicated—but doing them correctly when your heart rate is up and someone is screaming is different. That’s why we drill it, over and over.

Another great day of training in the books. 💪🩺

Today we ran an American Heart Association Heartsaver® First Aid/CPR/AED class at Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu in Pleasanton, CA with 10 motivated students — six adults and four teenagers — and they absolutely crushed it. I was thoroughly impressed by their enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and the fantastic questions they asked throughout the day.

One moment that really stood out: when I asked each student why they were there, one of the teen students said,

“I don’t want to be useless.”

That’s exactly the mindset. Don’t stand by helpless—learn the skills so you can step up when it counts.

Thank you all for spending your day learning lifesaving skills. You should be proud of yourselves. 👏

Most cardiac arrests don’t happen in public—they happen at home. That means the life you’re most likely to save with CPR isn’t a stranger, it’s someone you care about.

Swipe through these CPR facts everyone should know before an emergency:

What really happens in those first 4–6 minutes

Why “I’m afraid I’ll do it wrong” is the wrong answer

How hard and how fast to push

Why AEDs are designed for regular people, not just medical staff

If you’re not currently trained in First Aid/CPR/AED, now is the time to fix that.
