We all know the benefits of physical activity to our musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems but a recent systematic review and meta-analysis, which included 191,130 participants, shows how beneficial it is for our mental health, as well. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/2790780

Depression and physical activity have an inverse curvilinear relationship, meaning the more active you are the lower your risk of depression. Even low levels of physical activity, public health recommends 2.5 hours/week, show significant mental health benefits.

The take away, start or be more physically active to decrease your chances of depression/mental health issues, at least 2.5 hours/week. Please contact Proformance Physical Therapy with any questions or how to start/progress a program.

The importance of sleep can not be overstated, as we've presented here before. But a recent study showed adolescents had improved sleep quality, quantity and reduction in sleep disturbances when participating in a strength training program.

The strength training consisted of 3x/week, 55 minute sessions, performing 3 sets of 10-12 reps with 1 minute rest between sets and exercises. This was compared to a control group that did not participate in strength training.

But a new open access paper shows the link between physical activity and mental health in kids. The paper states, "60 minutes or more of physical activity for 6 days/week appeared optimal for overall mental well-being."

In a follow up to the Sportsmetrics program we'll be having this summer, a recent publication showing improvement in landing mechanics in adolescent girls, grades 6 to 8, with just strength training of hip and knee musculature for 6 months.

Although injury prevention is not tracked, improving landing mechanics, especially in females, can reduce chance of a non-contact knee injury, ie ACL. This study did not even have the girls perform jumping or landing activities, just strengthening!

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34751052/

Please contact Proformance Physical Therapy to get signed up for the Sportmetrics ACL prevention program or if you have any questions regarding injury prevention, strengthening.

Strength training during adolescence holds promise as an injury prevention program. The use of a school-based approach is novel and may represent a robust opportunity for injury prevention programs, as physical education class is often mandatory in this age group.

Swearing is considered taboo but it looks like a well timed curse word can improve social pain, physical pain tolerance, physical pain threshold along with increased performance measures including force and power. Swearing can also improve the therapeutic alliance between patient and PT.

So, go ahead and let out a curse word when performing that last set/rep to get the most benefit!

Background Words can change the way a patient thinks, feels, and performs. Swearing, or uttering a word that is considered taboo, is an often-ignored part of our language, even though over 50% of the population swears “sometimes” or “often”. If used correctly, within a biopsychosocial approa...

For those of you that use coffee as a pre-workout, well, it looks like you were onto something. A recent review shows caffeine from coffee can improve muscle strength, muscle endurance and mean velocity. But the review shows it takes much less than previously thought, 1-2 cups of coffee is it.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35203046/

So, keep pouring that cup before your workout and reap the benefits! Please contact Proformance Physical Therapy if you have any questions about starting or progressing your current program.

This review demonstrated an ergogenic effect of very low doses of caffeine on resistance exercise performance.
