Sometimes I, and the clinic by extension, get some amazing gifts, all sorts of gifts - be they food/beverages of any type imaginable, gift certificates, art, music, balloons, flowers, plants and plant starts and/or cards (to name but a few). Thank you everyone, and check this out! We all love it here.

And, did you know playing with Lego has major benefits for both children and adults? Like improving concentration, building self confidence, learning how to set and accomplish goals, becoming comfortable with failure and providing a sense of calm and relaxation. I think that’s way cool, don’t you?

One of the most difficult jobs around, and there are many, is home healthcare, specifically end of life/Hospice work. Is it rewarding, absolutely. Is it demanding, you betcha. Home healthcare workers live with multiple challenges ranging from musculoskeletal disorders and over exertion to chronic stress and exhaustion. HCWs also suffer from repeated exposure to hazardous work conditions as part of their very physically demanding work along with high levels of strain including both time and workload pressure. Far too many also suffer from low pay, little to no sick leave, disrespect and, sadly, for some, other mental and physical challenges.

I cannot imagine what my family would do without someone like Olivia and countless others who have helped us over the years. Their dedication, empathy and commitment is awe inspiring. This weekend, we swapped all sorts of stories - about life and its end, laughter, family, love, medicine and natural healing. I learned so many hacks and tricks just by observing and helping. I even got to give her something - acupuncture! These tiny needles travel so well :)

People love to bring visiting family members into the clinic. It’s probably a combo of, “Look what I’m doing.” and “Come with me and try this thing out.” along with “We’ve got one of those in our town too!” People also just love to bring family members who live right here in town to the clinic. Either way, it’s a win win win. Pop on in with a friend, family member, co-worker or fly solo, you’ll be stoked you did.

It’s so terrific when folks who work in the Healing Arts get in for some acu. Therapists, RNs, speech therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, PTs, dentists and dental hygienists, school counselors, hospice volunteers and workers, midwives and doulas, OTs, fellow acupuncturists, PAs, herbalists, nutritionists, homeopaths, MDs, osteopaths, energy healers and masters of things I not know of- you are welcome here always. Give yourself a break, you know what I’m saying. .

Let’s talk about temperature change. We’ve been experiencing a lot of temperature fluctuation this season and while not quite as drastic as last year’s Crane Camping, it’s still noteworthy in its effect upon us. Sudden temperature change can set us up for flus and colds but also make chronic respiratory conditions flare, triggering shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing. Sudden changes in temperature can also constrict blood vessels, increase overall blood pressure and cause extra stress on the heart. Dehydration, significant skin changes (burns, cracks and peeling) along with emotional well being can also be affected. Choose your wardrobe appropriately, stay hydrated, and spend time with loved ones when possible. And, pop on into the clinic - this place is fantastic for regulating our systems and keeping our bodies healthy, strong and fit. # temperaturechange

Hats off to local groups of people who do incredible health advocacy! Founded in 1984, Nebraska AIDS Project (NAP) has committed itself to compassionately battling not only AIDS/HIV itself but also the stigma which far far too often accompanies it. As Nebraska’s only community-based AIDS service organization, NAP provides much needed education, supportive services and advocacy. Spread the word, check them out online and, if possible, consider donating and/or volunteering - together we can!

As I clear off last year’s wall of encouragement, blessings, love and gratitude, I’m reminded of connection, community, the power of relationship and the incredible healing feats of the human body. Here’s to 2024 and thanks for supporting the clinic! None of this would be possible without each and every one of you.

The great thing about acupuncture needles is they’re small, they travel well. And, there’s always, always at least one person who’d love a treatment. Last year, around this time, I took some needles with me to the Sandhills - I think I’ll do that again.

Building nests in trees, building nests in recliners, there are a lot of similarities - the picking of an ideal spot, the gathering of items and all that arranging followed by rearranging. Key differences - no wind or rain, no bluejays or squirrels to worry about and no fear of your home ending up in a lettuce patch or having your eggs stolen. That, and acupuncture! Sounds like a win win win to me. Head on over and pick up some Nest Building Skills 101, we’ve got tons to share.

OK, it’s true - I haven’t had some sleepy patient leap up and fly right out the door following an acupuncture treatment, not yet at least. But, I will attest to witnessing some mighty magical transformations right here at LAP. Come on by and check it out, you’ll be glad you did :)
