Big shout out to AtEase and the opportunity they’ve given me and LAP to work with more veterans. Acupuncture has proven to be incredibly beneficial for veterans whether it’s by providing pain relief, helping with the adverse effects of medication or easing stress, fatigue and PTSD.

AtEase, founded in 2009, creates programs that “promote well being, resiliency and connection” for veterans, active duty service members, frontline healthcare workers and their loved ones. I’m honored that they contacted the clinic to offer a couple of months of free acupuncture for their members, it’s been a great collaboration. If you yourself or someone you know could benefit from their services, check them out - they provide support in both Lincoln and Omaha.

As many of us know, acupuncture is a safe, effective, evidence based way to support women during pregnancy. Let’s break down what kinds of things it can help by trimester. During trimester 1, acupuncture is terrific at helping women suffering from morning sickness, nausea and vomiting. Trimester 2 and trimester 3 for that matter is when acupuncture brings relief from things like back pain, sciatica, pelvic pain and headaches. Then finally, around 36/37 weeks acupuncture can ready the cervix, potentially shorten labor and promote relaxation.

Breech babies are big fans of acupuncture (all babies are) and receiving acupuncture can also treat insomnia. LAP welcomes Moms at any phase of pregnancy as do many folks around town be they chiros, midwives, doulas and/or labor delivery RNs/MDs - we’re all here to help

Let’s talk about diabetes and how acupuncture can help. 40 million Americans suffer from diabetes, that’s roughly 1 out of every 8 people, with around 90- 95% of those diagnosed with type 2. This doesn’t include the undiagnosed, of which there may be up to an added 10 million.

Type 2 diabetes causes high blood sugar due to insulin resistance leading to both blood vessel and nerve damage throughout the body. Folks with diabetes are at risk for heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, blindness, nerve pain and, if unmanaged, severe infections, especially in the feet. Common symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue and blurry vision.

There’s good news though - acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy for type 2 diabetes, often used in conjunction with lifestyle changes and conventional medication. Studies show acupuncture improves glycemic control (significantly reducing FBG, 2h PG and HbA1c levels) and increases insulin sensitivity (helping cells use glucose more effectively and reducing insulin resistance). Acupuncture is also very successful in managing both symptoms and complications due to type 2 such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, poor circulation, obesity and high blood pressure along with stress and anxiety. Lastly, acupuncture can help reduce medication side effects like gastrointestinal discomfort. If someone you love is living with type 2 diabetes, send them in or pop on in with them - they’ll be thrilled you did.

Acupuncture can help. Here’s another cool study -

According to a recent randomized controlled trial at the Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, research proves acupuncture can significantly reduce the numbness, tingling and pain often caused by chemotherapy. Cancer patients receiving acupuncture experienced greater improvement in nerve function and peripheral nerve symptoms along with increased quality of life compared to those receiving sham treatment (needling at non acupuncture locations). Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) affects sensory and motor nerves of the hands and feet with symptoms ranging from mild paresthesia (pins and needles/ burning/tingling sensations) to severe weakness, pain and functional impairment. This was a small, short study- 70 post chemotherapy patients, treated for two weeks, six sessions of 30 minutes each. In addition, both groups received mecobalamin (an active form of B12). Estimates of patients developing CIPN after exposure to chemotherapeutic agents range from 30-60%

If someone you know is suffering from CIPN, send them on over - LAP would love to help.

It’s true - regularly scheduled acupuncture treatments can actually retrain the nervous system to manage stress more effectively. Acupuncture improves both physical and emotional resilience by shifting us from a “fight or flight” state to a “rest and digest” mode. Why run from the bear when you can chill out in a chair? Pop on in and lower your cortisol, reduce your anxiety, lift feelings of depression and support your immunity - you’ll be so glad you did.

Some patients say the clinic is Lincoln’s “best kept secret”. What if it wasn’t?

What if more people knew no matter what their health concerns were, they had a comfy recliner to stretch out on? Blankets, pillows, some soft music (headphones are fine) in a room full of beautiful plants, some art and a few tasteful knick knacks. What if there were others, in their own recliner nests, asleep and resting, everyone’s collective presence helping each individual feel less isolated, less alone, more regulated. What if everyone knew acupuncture really does work? Thanks for spreading the word and thank you all for your support, it doesn’t go unnoticed.

For the nerds, the curious, the studious and everyone else, check this out -

A recent large-scale systematic review of acupuncture and its effects conducted at Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine reveals some amazing stuff. It’s true - acupuncture continues to demonstrate consistent clinical benefit for reducing depression across diverse patient groups. The review compiles 37 randomized controlled trials along with extensive studies concluding (drumroll) acupuncture produces measurable improvements in depression severity, sleep quality, cognitive function and neurobiological markers relevant to mood regulation. Utilizing functional MRI, research proves acupuncture modulates multiple large-scale brain networks like the cognitive control network, the limbic system, the visual network and the sensorimotor network. Come on in folks, these tiny needles really can help!
