Ellen loves to travel, often driving around the country in her camper to see new places. The New Jersey resident’s recent road trip to Nebraska was a little out of the ordinary, however. She drove here to receive treatment for a rare form of ovarian cancer at the April Sampson Cancer Center.

Congratulations to Sarah Bowhay, RN, on receiving a DAISY Award.

Here is what a family had to say about Sarah in her nomination:
"Sarah was a rock we leaned heavily while my dad was at Bryan. Her ability to go slowly, tenderly, and always giving us honest information about hospice care was unforgettable. She called us when we reached out for more information, checked on us continuously, and shared our tears. Thank you, Sarah, – our hearts are healing due to you."

Thank you for being helpful and welcoming, Sarah! We are proud of you. The DAISY Award recognizes outstanding nurses at Bryan.

In 2025, employees across the health system stepped up in a remarkable way. Together, we donated over 400 units of blood, surpassing our goal for the year and helping save up to 1,224 lives.

Thank you to each and every team member who rolled up a sleeve and made a different for our patients and community members across Nebraska.

Congratulations to Brock Cookman, DO for receiving the Care Like Crazy Award!

A patient shared these kind words about Brock.
"I recently had an unexpected visit to Bryan Medical Center. It was quite a critical situation because I was dealing with three pulmonary embolisms. I had never experienced anything like this before and was all alone, without family, unsure of what to expect. Then, Dr. Brock Cookman, a cardiologist, came into my room and took the time to explain everything that was happening. He laid out the treatment plan and reassured me that everything would be okay. He also shared information about a procedure he uses for patients with my condition. He mentioned that if the blood thinners weren’t effective, a thrombectomy might be necessary. Dr. Cookman was attentive and made sure to explain all the details while showing genuine interest in my well-being. He listened to my concerns and provided me with the pros and cons of the procedure, allowing me to make an informed decision. I decided to go ahead with his suggestion for the thrombectomy, and it was a success! He told me it would take about an hour, but he completed it in just 40 minutes. The best part? I AM ALIVE! Thank you! Dr. Cookman did a fantastic job keeping me informed, and he truly deserves the “Care Like Crazy Award.” His dedication to his patients and willingness to listen makes a big difference. Thank you, Dr. Cookman! I appreciate your caring nature. Keep up the excellent work; it does not go unnoticed!"

Brock, thank you for the care you provide daily to your patients. You make a difference in the lives of others. We are honored that you are part of the Bryan Medical Staff.

"The Bryan Medical Center staff caring for my son were exceptionally kind, compassionate, diligent and efficient. They took excellent care of him in the most caring manner. Just when his condition was looking bleak, pulmonologist Dr. Violi recommended a course of action that was the turning point in my son's recovery! Thank you to all the medical personnel involved in his care." — Andrea, grateful mother

Congratulations to Dr. Louis Violi, Nebraska Pulmonary Specialties, and the Bryan East Campus 6th Floor North ICU team on this honor.

With recent changes to the federal childhood vaccination recommendations, you may have questions or concerns.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and numerous medical organizations continue to support the previous immunization schedule, which was developed based on decades of research by pediatric experts to keep children healthy and safe.

When making decisions for your family, we recommend speaking directly with your child’s pediatrician or healthcare provider. They are most familiar with your child’s health history and can help provide guidance that is right for you and your family.
