April is Autism Awareness Month. The Lincoln Police Department recognizes the importance of increased awareness for the challenges faced by people and families touched by autism. One of those challenges is the danger of wandering behaviors.

The Lincoln Police Department is proud to partner with the Lancaster County Sheriff and the Autism Family Network on enhanced awareness and training for our officers and dispatchers, as well as a multi-layer approach that includes wandering prevention and a tracking technology.

Project Lifesaver is an international program that incorporates specialized training and small battery-powered transmitters that can used to find people who have wandered from the safety of their caregivers. LPD and LSO have more than a dozen Project Lifesaver certified officers.

We’re grateful for our partners in the Autism community, as well as generous support from the Jullia Rose Foundation, dedicated to the safety of our community.

When helping toddlers learn to talk, we need to invite them to communicate. However, we don't want to place so much pressure that communication becomes a battle. Find the sweet spot, the middle ground, the learning level... the happy place!!!

One of my favorite tips for emergent communicators! Model model model especially in routines!)- then lead in….. and wait! This strategy is great for all modes of communication- speaking, signing, and AAC!

This strategy also varies by child, some may pick up sooner than others while others may need it modeled many more times. The key is to give lots of exposures and then slowly add in wait time for a child to finish a phrase. If the child doesn't fill in the phrase, it's okay, the adult still says it!

No pressure and LOTS of communication opportunities is win win! 🎉🎉

Our Story

At the Lincoln RiteCare Clinic, we serve families of children ages 0-5 (pre-kindergarten) to help them develop the communication skills they need to be successful at home, with their peers, and in the community. Any children with speech or language delays are welcome to participate in our clinic, as availability allows. We work to have space for as many children and families as possible through a variety of service delivery models - individual therapy sessions, skilled play group sessions, our AAC Preschools, and parent training opportunities.

All RiteCare services are provided at no cost to families, funded by the generous support of the Nebraska and local Lincoln Scottish Rite Masons.

Here on our page we share information about clinic events, updates about daily in-session activities, ideas for caregivers to support language development at home, and community resources that families of young children may find helpful. We also like to keep members of our local Masons community updated on how their support is making a difference for the children and families of Lincoln!
