So many babies have respiratory issues, weak immune systems, dental issues, and other health problems because doctors aren’t stressing the importance of first optimizing the mother’s Vitamin D level during pregnancy and then maintaining a sufficient level during lactation.

In fact, because of this failure, at least over half of all breastfed babies, with some studies pointing to over 90%, are severely deficient, leaving them predisposed to many health issues both as infants and continuing with long-term effects into childhood, including:

—RSV, asthma, reactive airway, influenza, etc.
—Stunted or delayed growth
—Weak bones
—Muscle weakness
—Dental problems
—Weak immune system
—Behavioral issues
—Allergies & skin issues
—Cradle cap
—Irritability
—Hypocalcemic seizures

I sought out to find research that would indicate whether or not sufficiently optimizing the lactating mother’s Vitamin D would be sufficient for her breastfed baby or if baby needed it directly.

I found research indicating that it would indeed be effective. 

HOWEVER it takes a very significant dosage to effectively support an optimal level in baby.

One study determined that a mother’s DAILY dosage of 6,400 IU’s effectively gave her baby the necessary 400 IU’s.

Summary: Mothers must be proactively optimizing both their Vitamin D and magnesium.

Moms: Especially in winter, please support your Vitamin D level! My first choice is a good cod liver oil (after healthy sun exposure when possible) and then additional D3 especially in the winter. I’ll link my favorites below.

NOTE: Magnesium must be sufficient for the body to absorb D. Plus the body’s magnesium levels increase during pregnancy.

As the temperatures drop, our bodies need a little extra support. Here are a few simple ways to stay healthy, energized, and resilient through the colder months:

✨ Prioritize warmth
Keep your neck, feet, and lower back warm—these areas play a big role in circulation and immune support.

🥣 Eat warming foods
Soups, stews, bone broth, roasted veggies, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, and cooked proteins help support digestion and keep your internal fire strong.

💧 Stay hydrated (yes, even when it’s cold!)
