In the online VBAC world (vaginal birth after cesarean), some moms hold their arm up in celebration for the camera. As a VBAC mom myself (x3), I had that same goal and know what this mom is feeling. Yet…I also know that birth is deeply personal. Not everyone desires the same layout for their birth story and that is OK. I am by your side no matter what you choose💜

Most of the time, it’s just me and the dad and the nurses in the room. However, I love working with supportive family members who want to be part of the birth team: mothers, sisters, aunts, and friends. We all work together, all hands-on deck. When baby is born, they get to be the first to see the beauty of birth and the party in the room💜

Maternity care in America is a service industry. Hospital staff is there to serve YOU. If a mom can use the shower for pain relief, but a nurse tells her that the drain doesn’t work, ask to switch to another room. If that’s not possible, ask where the cart of towels is located and grab about 57 to put on the bathroom floor. Problem solved😉Be empowered to kindly, yet confidently, express your wishes for the services available. We do that when we pay for other services…birth is no exception 💜

My first client on an island! Only one tourist thought that I kidnapped a baby, lol. The need for quality birth support and education is in every land 💜

During labor, I love being able to merge available resources with my own. This is a picture of my inflatable CUB stool inside a portable tub. I'm giving mom a hydrotherapy waterfall using a graduated measuring cup that’s typically reserved for other uses. Even in the hospital, the possibilities for comfort can be creative 💜

GATE CONTROL Theory: Page 19 from my digital curriculum / Do you know what it is? This 1960’s theory plays a huge role in labor today. Although the pain of labor is real, our awareness of it decreases when we receive alternative pleasant stimuli like pulses from a TENS machine, warmth from a heating pad, or physical touch from a massage...and there are more! In other words, the gateway to pain closes when our brain is also experiencing pleasure... and we are much more able to cope💜

It all began in 2011...

One out-of hospital labor, one cesarean, one misdiagnosed ectopic pregnancy, and three all natural hospital VBAC’s with a caring midwife and doula. This is my story…

You could call me a natural mama of sorts, but my motivations came from an inward desire to have a meaningful birth experience. After 39 hours of labor at home and at a freestanding birth center, I transferred to a hospital by ambulance and within five minutes of arrival, our daughter was born via emergency c-section under general anesthesia. I understand what it’s like to have birth happen in a way you didn’t expect.

Our daughter spent time in the NICU, but she was healthy (thank you Lord!) My one regret was that I didn't hire a doula to help me through both the long labor and the transfer to a hospital I had never visited. Neither my husband nor I knew what was happening moment to moment. I know that even if things turned out the same, having a doula would have made an immeasurable difference.

Six months later, doctors thought I had a cancerous germ cell tumor in my o***y. I went into major surgery to remove my right o***y and Fallopian tube, only it wasn’t a tumor. It was a baby. Although I am so grateful that it was not cancer, I have personally felt the loss of a child and the feelings that came with that.

We became pregnant shortly thereafter (with only one o***y and one tube) and I knew I wanted to pursue a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). We hired an amazing doula named Kim to help us through. One week after my due date and facing induction, my water broke at home. We raced up I-280 at 1:45am where Kim met us at the Emergency Entrance of Flower Hospital. Our second daughter was born 45 minutes later in my street clothes. I am aware of the mental challenges that face birth and the unknown that comes with it.

We went on to have two more children (both VBACs and both sons) and Kim was there each time. We had so much support from her at every turn of our birth journey. Now that our family is complete, my passion is to help provide the same support that I was given, to mothers from all walks of life. I am certified through DONA International, the leader in evidence based doula training, and I have served as a doula for numerous families. Ultimately, I can’t control the end result of any birth, but I will always give supportive, sensitive and loving care.

You will never be the same after childbirth. The birth of new life has the power to transform your own. Birth was meant to have meaning.
