FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 8–14, 2026 Recognized as Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — March 8–14, 2026 has been designated as Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana, a statewide initiative encouraging Hoosiers to review their safety plans and prepare for spring and summer severe weather.
Severe Weather Preparedness Week serves as an annual reminder for individuals, families, schools, and businesses to take proactive steps to stay safe during severe storms. Indiana commonly experiences hazardous weather in the spring, including tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail, and flash flooding.
State and local emergency management agencies urge residents to use this week to review emergency plans, identify safe shelter locations, and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
“As we enter the severe weather season, preparedness can make a life-saving difference,” said emergency management officials. “Taking time now to plan ahead helps ensure that families know what to do when severe weather threatens.”
Residents are encouraged to take several preparedness steps during the week:
• Create or review a family emergency plan, including where to go during a tornado warning.
• Identify a safe shelter location, such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building away from windows.
• Build or refresh an emergency kit with essentials such as water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and important documents.
• Check weather alert systems, including NOAA Weather Radios, mobile alerts, and local media notifications.
• Practice severe weather safety drills at home, work, or school.
Each day during Severe Weather Preparedness Week highlights a different preparedness topic:
• Sunday: Introduction to Severe Weather Safety
• Monday: Watches vs. Warnings
• Tuesday: Severe Weather Warnings and Tornadoes (Statewide Tornado Drill Day)
• Wednesday: Lightning Safety
• Thursday: Hail and Wind Safety
• Friday: Flood Safety
• Saturday: Extreme Heat Safety
Statewide Tornado Drill – Tuesday, March 10
As part of the week’s activities, Indiana will conduct a Statewide Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 10. The state will conduct a statewide test of communication systems at 10:15 AM EDT.
Residents, businesses, schools, and organizations are encouraged to participate by practicing their tornado safety procedures when the test occurs. This drill provides an opportunity to ensure everyone understands how warnings are delivered and how quickly they can move to a safe shelter location.
The drill is intended to help people recognize warning systems such as outdoor sirens, weather radios, and emergency alerts while reinforcing the importance of immediately seeking shelter in a basement or interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building away from windows.
Sign Up for Emergency Notifications
Greene County Emergency Management encourages residents to sign up for Reverse 911, an emergency alert system designed to send alert texts directly to your phone. Alerts may be sent for natural disasters, community emergencies, severe weather, chemical spills, evacuation notices, or other important public safety information.
Reverse 911 can send more precise warnings and instructions no matter where you are, but only if your mobile number and physical address are registered in the system.
Registration for Reverse 911 requires users to create an account and password and provide their address and phone number. Phone numbers registered in the system will not be used for other purposes or sold to outside parties.

On Monday, March 2, Greene County Ambulance Service employees did our annual refresher training. This is something we do every year to update some of our skills we don't get to use on a daily basis and gauge our proficiency in our ability to provide the community with the best services possible. Thank you to all of the evaluators that showed up to assist. Educators on hand were personnel from Greene County General Hospital and Dr. Gamble, IU Health Lifeline, AirEvac Lifeteam, and our own Greene County Ambulance personnel.

RHIC (Rural Healthcare Innovation Collaborative) staff, based out of Union Hospital, were recently present at Greene County Ambulance Service for some extensive training in trauma and OB patients. With the recent closing of the local OB department, the staff here felt it necessary to continue our education and training in order to strengthen our abilities for the Greene County residents. Here are some of the training provided:

Review of relevant pathophysiology of shock, hemorrhage, and traumatic injuries.

Rational guidelines & practical clinical tools for rapid stabilization of the critically injured and obstetric patients.

Review of essential principles of transfer of trauma victims and obstetric patients to higher levels of care, with anticipation that the critical trauma victim will require no more than 30 minutes.

Early recognition of imminent delivery and obstetric complications and care of pregnant patient and newborn.

Greene County Ambulance and it's staff would like to thank RHIC for the training provided. And, want the residents of Greene County to know that we are continuously training to provide the best EMS care we can should you ever need us in an emergency.

Southern Indiana has been upgraded to an Enhanced Risk for tornadoes from 3–10 PM today. Tornadoes are possible, even in February. Severe weather doesn’t wait for spring, and people are often caught off guard this time of year.

Now is the time to prepare:
• Review your shelter location

• Check your weather radio

If a tornado is spotted in your area or a warning is issued, do not wait. Move immediately to your safe place on the lowest level, interior room, away from windows.

Don’t assume it’s “too early” in the year. Stay alert. Stay ready.

Here at Greene County Ambulance Service, we wanted to show off some new equipment we just put in service. First are the Stryker Lifepak 35 touchscreen-based cardiac monitor/defibrillators. . These replace the Lifepak 15's that we currently have. The 35's are state of the art machines that allow us to bring another level of care to our Greene County residents. The second piece of equipment are the new GlideScope Go 2 portable video laryngoscope. These are designed for rapid, first pass successful airways in the field. The GlideScope 2 is the same video laryngoscope used in many hospital settings. The GlideScope 2 along with the Lifepak 35 and our monthly training programs are some of the many ways we are striving to improve our ability to care for our Greene County residents. Stryker and GlideScope reps were on hand to assist in training. Thank you Director David Simpson, Training Officer Samantha Thornton, and everyone else behind the scenes for making these a reality. And thank you to all of the crews for your passion and dedicated service to the Greene County residents. Subscribe to our page for other new and exciting things to come.
